I think that the lady was asking where her family originated from. I think that is a genuine question, maybe not the time nor the place but it is hardly a major issue.

I see it, as I said, as her having the additional grace to add a face-to-face apology to the one she issued immediately after the incident occurred.

No, ellipsis, it would make her diplomatic. She said something - albeit in all innocence - that someone claims upset them and subsequently made a huge fuss about. The perceived offender apologised. That’s diplomacy.
