However, these people are humans but I bet the deaths of some of them will not elicit the same outpouring of grief as the poor small souls lost in Solihull this past week and I believe that is a shame on society. I cannot imagine how those migrants suffered. R.I.P.

//To go to these extremes then you have to be desperate.//
Help me out here, Helen, because I’m foxed. They are in France, in a safe and (fairly) civilised country. They can claim asylum there if they wish. Why are they desperate to get here?
//…by the end of the year, none of the cross-channel operators will accept bookings from foot passengers.//
That’s not quite correct. Brittany Ferries will continue to take foot passengers on all its routes (though they do not operate Calais to Dover). But it’s irrelevant. The main reason that would not work is that “leave to enter” is required before embarkation (i.e. you must present a passport or similar and, in most cases, a visa). That opportunity has always existed and the people who choose not to take it are those who have a good idea that without an asylum claim (which can only be made once in the UK) their entry would probably be denied.
//If they are found to be in the UK without a valid reason then they should be removed.//
Yes they should, but they’re not.
//…but I bet the deaths of some of them will not elicit the same outpouring of grief as the poor small souls lost in Solihull this past week...//
Why should it? Illegal migrants deliberately place themselves in peril by setting off to cross the Channel in totally unsuitable craft. They have no need to do so. By contrast the kiddies were doing what kids do – having a lark in the snow and ice. Foolish, but that’s how children are.
//...and I believe that is a shame on society.//
There’s no comparison between the two and the shame is that you choose to equate them.
//The link says the tragedy happened "off the course of Kent, near Dungeness." Perhaps Ashford is the nearest hospital.//
Looking at the tracker data it seems it occurred near enough in mid-Channel. I have a friend who works in the William Harvey Hospital (Ashford) where the casualties were taken and he tells me that the hospital “cleared” it’s A&E department in the early hours of this morning to prepare for their arrival. When he arrived for work early this morning the department was surrounded by police and people were being stopped at the hospital gate by police and many turned away, being directed to use other hospitals.
