Johnson was chucked because of his support for Chris Pincher.
Javed and Sunk resigned and then a growing number of MPs (I think 50) resigned.
I never got the impression that this inquiry was an unfair targeting because Conservative MPs had supported him through Partygate, Owen Paterson, Wallpapergate, the unlawful prorogation of Parliament, Jennifer Arcuri, and the backing of Dominic Cummings over lockdown breaches.
Johnson's problem he gave the impression of being ethically unsound - the Conservatives are quick to throw their leaders to the wolves if they their popularity wanes (Thatcher had the same problem as did Heath and Eden).
Not spite - just politics.
