There was so much heat and light generated when it was thought that a murderous Islamist was on a rampage. It's all gone a bit quiet since it has been confirmed that he specifically targeted women and the only man he killed was a hard-working muslim (added irony there, I think).

Misogyny is a growing evil in the world.

There's an irony in this post in that the most  misogynistic culture on the planet is that of Islam - but those men are clearly not alone in blaming women for their own failings.  There are also those who airbrush women out of society because they want to be them.  It seems women really have drawn the short straw all round.

Incel means "involuntary celibate"... it is a term that such people use to describe themselves being deprived of sexual attention to which they feel entitled. they usually accuse women of being superficial and flocking to attractive men (they call "Chads" and the women "Stacies")... some of them have a biologically determinist angle where they argue they are being discriminated against for the features they were born with (i.e. they had the misfortune to be born ugly and are deprived of sex by shallow women)

as jack says it is an inherently misogynistic community in all its guises... they frequently congregate in online spaces and feed off each other's misery. i have actually spent a bit of time on incel forums (fascinated as i am by strange ideas) and they are extremely depressing places that are very conducive to radicalisation

TORATORATORA, I've asked you several times to explain what you mean by "Let's do the usual dance" or its variants but you have chosen not to.

In response to the incident, you used the phrase because you believed the tragedy was committed by a Muslim, even though there was absolutely no evidence to support your Pavlovian response.

You didn't mention "Islam" or "Muslim" but based upon the instances of when you have used the phrase and gone on to state you believed Islam or a Muslim was  responsible, a blind person would know what you meant.

If you want to refute this, on you go.

No. there's no irony in this post, naomi.

Islam is, as you say, the most misogynistic culture on the planet. It is simply that is has nothing whatsoever to do with the tragic events in Sydney (bar the poor security guard) and therefore with this thread.

Western men are far more comfortable in talking about misogyny as a thing that happens 'over there' rather than as a thing which also happens 'over here'.

Why aren't the sensible men bringing up their boys to respect women (and I'll be deducting a house-point from anyone who tries to subvert that into their own argument)?

Blinding post JTH.

I bow.

Thank you, sp.😘

quite right corbyloon.

tora... your attempt to weasle out of being held accountable for your vile behaviour are the kind of thing i would expect from a child not a fully grown man

Jackthehat, it's ironic insofar as Islam was blamed - and a mysogynist is guilty.

Thank you all. A new one for me to remember.

here's an irony in this post in that the most  misogynistic culture on the planet is that of Islam

well the ten or so language students in my class ( the class I am in) seem quite happy in 'modest dress'. only one is western dress and she is English

the irony is that the usual suspects ( you know who you are) were preparing to hammer away at their fave whacka-mole (islam)  and found instead they were all christian - I think it is called - they found someone had shot their fox

Latest news is that the killer has very religious parents, had a history of mental health problems, and is said to have advertised sexual services to both women and men.

Well his 'services' are no longer on offer now.Shame he hadn't taken the bullet a little earlier but in his case better late than never.

My suggestion that he might be an Islamist - as so many of these attackers have been, was countered by saying his name was Jewish sounding, as if that was a complete negation.

When as I was about to ask, why is it racist to suggest someone is perhaps a Muslim because of his appearance & the many instances of similar crimes by them, but not because of his name, 'you know who' closed down the thread.

you did not "suggest that someone was perhaps a muslim" tho

You don't 'know who' Khandro, only the Ed and the Mod involved know.

i wonder if maybe in the muslim community they struggle with mental health and are unable to get help because of stigma

Khandro 'knows' in the same way some ABers absolutely 'knew' this killer was a Muslim, AH.

Some do, Roadman.  When a Muslim extremist does a terrible thing some weep for the victims and despair at the backlash they may be facing when they go about their daily lives.

Question Author

No Muslims involved in this attack.

Only a mentally-ill man determined to punish only women for his troubles.

mozz: // "Retro, dictionary definition of incel:

" A member of an online community of young men who consider themselves unable to attract women sexually, typically associated with views that are hostile towards women and men who are sexually active."// - hang on so are there no female incels who can't get a boy friend? what about gay incels?
