but surely, justice is in the eye of the beholder. In these so called "less developed" countries (what a hideously patronising phrase - tho I hope you include the USA in that for their use of the uber-cruel death row), there will be many who believe the punishment fits the crime. Most people in this country would disagree, but as WM noted, someone from elsewhere (a "more developed" planet perhaps) may well judge our system as more cruel and less just than others.

crete, I have no idea how awful prison is but for me, those things you mentioned are trivial and superficial. The punishment for me would be in not being able to see my family, hold or play with my child, take him to nursery, laugh with my friends and be there when they needed me, to name but a few. Compared to those losses, the "luxury" of a tv in my cell, no council tax and three square meals a day seems pretty irrelevant.

I agree with kick3m0n on this. The fact is, tonight, I could go home and have sausage and mash whilst watching The Sopranos...or I could go practice my guitar, or pop over the road for an after work drink, or paint my attic, or go out and buy the new Scissor Sisters single, or scour the Internet for a holiday destination, or, or...

It's choice. Choice of what I want to do. I suppose because we never have to think about that kind of choice, we take it for granted.

That is what would kill me...not being able to do what I want to do, and when I wanted to do it.

Imagine having that taken away from you, for 25 years or whatever.

Don't think I would last 25 months, let alone years.

We need someone who's been in jail to post a response here.

well,this question has certainly got you all going,but i repeat MY view,of which i am free to do as you all are,he should have been hanged,and as for you ward minter,a little banter does not hurt,does it,we both thrieve on it. and as for you kick,i dident know you were that kind hearted,maybe if you lived in london and saw what 4 scum holigans did to my son when he was 14 you would change your views. there is a lot of scum out there murdering and raping old and young people,robbing them,assaulting them.and what do the courts do,nothing. its time we came down harder on these people and i for one believe the death penalty should be brought back in for certain crimes.

Norm, I ain't in the slightest bit kind. My point is that rotting in prison for the rest of your life is a more of a punishment for these cowardly scumbags to face than a quick death by capital punishment. That's WHY so many of them try to commit suicide, because it's EASIER than spending the rest of your life in prison and living with the consequences of what you have done. I agree Norm, punishments shoud be harsher. Life should mean LIFE, every day till they literally die in jail. To me, that would be a far greater deterrent than a quick death by lethal injection or electric shock.

But what about if someone was found guilty and turns out they're innocent Norman? Death sentence is a whole other can of worms.

I personally go along with the theory that Huntley should spend entire life behind bars but I also think that he should not be allowed to sell stories to the papers, that papers that give this man unnecessay publicity should have some sort of legal action... no a legal brain so no idea what this would be... and that there should be very few things like TV, games etc... in his cell.

I just think if you start 'playing God' for want of a better expression then where does it end? People are subjective, what one person thinks is a fitting punishment for one crime, another will deem as too harsh or too easy. Our laws get a lot of things wrong, sentencing, caving in to political correctness etc... but on the whole, I don't think we do too badly on crime and punishment in this country.

The families wont be able to get over their child's deaths untill Huntley is gone. Todays news will have brought things back to the fore again.

but Norm (and Cobra) as I said in an earlier post, there have been a number of high profile cases where the families, or the victims themselves have come out and said that they forgive the guilty party, or bear them no malice. You therefore cannot begin to speak on behalf of the families, as you have no idea of their feelings, wishes, religious background etc. And without wishing to sound entirely heartless, our justice system must remain objective and, to a large extent, should not take into account the feelings of the victims or victims families. It should be based on fact, evidence and strict sentencing guidelines, not on how gut wrenching a plea can be made in court by a heartborken family.

He should be made to serve every day of his sentence but with no tv, playstation, canary, education program or anything to distract him from focusing on what a sick ******* he is.
Solitary confinment with no talking to fellow prisoners and no visits, total sensory deprovation.
Just him and 4 bare walls with just a picture of Maxine Carr smiling at him with the words " I got away with it and look at the life i've got now".
And under 24 hour observation so there would be no hope of escaping his 24/7 nightmare.
