Why can't we all get on?

I have not been here long but get increasingly frustrated by the unhelpful and almost racist comments of some people on here.

Why can't all the people in this country live in peace. To constantly pick on muslims is very unfair. They only came here for a better life and I think it is the duty of all British people to ensure that they integrate as best as possible.

We should all go along to our local mosque and ask what we can do to help the muslim community. Maybe we could give them financial help or prey along side them to give them some sort of comfort during their hardship due to the narrow minded bigots in this country.

Perhaps it would help if people better understood islam. Maybe it would be good if islam was taught in our schools. I think that this would help us to understand muslims better and make for a better and more understanding society.

If we don't act now, we risk inflaming the extremists muslims. Better to spiritually connect with those that would advocate terrorism and try to lure them away from extremism.

My opinion so that does NOT make it wrong. i happen to think yours is, so touche! I live in Leicester, very highly populated with all sorts of religions, creeds, colours and races. No problem with the others. They just get along and fit in. I dont hear the seikhs up in arms every 5 minutes complaining about this that and the other and expecting us all to change for them, and if you take the time to read what i put, i said i do not, not for one minute, think all muslims are terrorists, but some are, fact!

Okay...let me just rephrase what you've said so that you can see itr from my point of view:

You say about living in peace but its the white blokes who are the paedophiles.... i know full well they are not all paedophiles before i get bombarded but it is that race that hosts all the paedophiles of this world.

You're characterising a whole religion...multiple nations with the acts of a few lunat...

Tell you what...have you ever heard of that untra right wing fundamentalist church in the states that looks for notices about funerals for gay men, then turn up with placards that say "AIDS IS GOD'S WRATH OBN F*GGOTS'?

Now, would you say that's representative of Christians in general?

When you see reports in the papers of a black gang steaming through trains, robbing people of iPods, jewellry and money - do you say, "Ah ha...typical"?

If you're basing your opinion on reports on Thames news at the latest 'Muslim outrage' rather than balancing it with what you see day to day - peaceful, even boring Muslims going about their day to day business, then I'm afraid your opinion is based on a falsehood...which makes it wrong.

Okay...I'll give you this...in my opinion, your opinion is wrong.

Can we agree on that?

OK, OK, let's actually get the debate back on track.

First off, I think Emma1984 is indeed being naive, as extremists have already been inflamed by the media and His Blairness. And divisions and segregation in society has been an issue since at least the 1970s. In an ideal world, we'd all sit around and hold hands and hug each other and have a wonderful time. Unfortunately, certain people (the extremists, who it has to be said are definitely a minority, again the media and His Blairness) are determined to make sure this doesn't happen.

Overall I'm fine with the presence of Muslims on two grounds-

1. That they're not the sort who think the UK should be put under Sharia Law. Frankly, that's ridiculous; 3% of individuals dictating the whole country?

2. The veil. I'm not a feminist, but the veil is not a Muslim feature, it's a cultural thing, and in my mind, a misogynistic cultural thing at that. Why should women be though of as different?

Well that's my two cents. On with the debate! Or the slanging match, whatever...
One other thing...with what's been going on in the Lebanon and Iraq (approx 670,000 dead between the two), if I were a Muslim, I'd be feeling a tad...touchy right now.

Between us, the UK and the US have guaranteed massive instability in the region for the next few decades and a breeding ground for a whole new generation of 'martyrs'.

We have c**ked up royally.
my opinion, my right and nothing you say will change that!
NH

I'm with you on both points.

It' s nothing to be with me per se - but the veil bothers me, because it seems to symbolise a patriarchical society which doesn't sit well with our current sexual politics.

I've read that it can be liberating...but I donno...my issue with it is that it kinda...how can I put this...t kinda makes the woman seem like a possession who is only allowed to be seen by her man.

But I hold my hand up...I'm speaking from a position of 100% ignorance.

God, I wish there were some Muslim AB'ers. I have SO many questions.
Ah but unruliejulie - I will always try to change your opinion, even if I fail.

...and I will always fail because we've lived different lives. I've been lucky to be personal mates with s few Muslims who have provided me with a different perspective to the extremists I see on tv.

Also, one of them invited me to his wedding where I had the best curry EVER.

For that I shall always be grateful.

Thank you to all the people who answered my question, even those who didn't agree with me. We are all entitled to our opinion. I would like to give you all a big hug for being so kind as to answer my question. It has given me a lovely warm glow knowing so many of you gave me some of your time.

Thank-you.
Not only are some people stranger than we imagine..... .....
sp, you are quite right, you WILL always try and change my opinion and most of the time, i do try and appreciate other views, but on this issue, i feel very strongly. Please do not get me wrong and think i have an issue with ALL Muslims. I dont. My problem is that I feel they are taking over and i am not just on about the extremists, terrorists and all, i just feel they want things to go their way all the time. I am honestly sick to death of hearing about how they are up in arms about this that and the other. Maybe this is the minority but i still think feelings run deep in the Muslim communities and if you scratched beneath the surface you would be shocked at how a lot of them feel, especially the young male Muslims. As you said you know Muslims, well, so do i. I have worked and lived by many over the years so as i said, dont get me wrong, i am conmcerned with the wider issue. i hope this doesnt offend you in any way because that is the last thing i want to do but , i do think you wear rose tinted glasses on this issue.
as for the curries, well, on that i cant fault them! nest time, have some for me.lol
unruliejulie

I take your point...we all have different perspectives.

Y'see - there are some of us who can strongly disagree without resorting to name-calling and childishness.

We rock.
sp. i agree !!!!!! we rock! lol
I think you have a calming effect on AB sp1814
Pack it up Emma, I'm filling up. Go out now and Hug a Hoodie, but be careful my dear they may not be as loving as you appear to be.
I wondered what to say in this thread but all I can think of is to point at sp1814's posts and say, "Er... what he said." All stated far better than I could ever have. I don't think he in any way is wearing rose-tinted specs at all - he seems very clear-thinking to me, julie, whereas it sounds to me as though you've over-reacted to the gross over-reporting of muslim "unrest" in the media. It makes me shudder to read phrases like "I feel they are taking over" in your post - not because I believe it, I don't, but because of the creepy thought-process it suggests.
Emma - if you were a little older, I suspect you would find that a lot of people do respect the majority of Muslims who live here and have integrated, and are thoroughly decent loyal British citizens. One of the problems is that a lot of them have originated from poorer Islamic countries where education is limited so they cannot speak English well, and mostly have to work in unskilled jobs. Without education and fluent use of the British native language, it is difficult for them to integrate and improve their standard of living. They also often come from countries who do not have democratic values like ours which have evolved over hundreds of years where many different religions have had to coexist. Nevertheless, this is a Christian country and when they come here they need to accept that they cannot simply walk in, accept all the benefits of our State system and expect to change the culture and legal system of our country to suit themselves. If we were to emigrate to Spain, or wherever, we would expect to observe their customs and language if we wanted to be treated seriously.
its too late to all get along, the war in iraq will go on for decades

How do you know how old I am. The 1984 in my name has nothing to do with my age.
I respect Islam a alot - its an ancient sacred religion. I even have muslim friends and they are great people. But i feel some of them, the more religious ones, seem to want to take over the country and cannot seem to integrate in society. They try to preach every where. Look at the veil issue for instance, that really disgusts me. Do they expect us to change the law for them..??? sikh and hindus were and are never that demanding. I only have problems with the more religious msulims.
Excuse me Alfie, but didn't sikhs get the law changed to allow them to not wear crash helmets on motor bikes?
