Surely it must be illegal to stop and search people for no apparent reason? How did they manage to pass that?

Even is it does upset people, I would rather the police have powers to stop and search than see another 7/7. I vividly remember that day - for hours I had no word from my family and thought they were dead, and it was the longest day of my life. I'm sure those who were injured or lost loved ones aren't complaining.
Tillyfloss doesn't feel safe, and neither do many others - including me.
Gromit, "There can be no end of freedoms that can be curtailed with the Prevention of Terrorism Act'". Hopefully one freedom that will be curtailed is the freedom to blow people to smithereens.

You took the words out my mouth Naomi -big up for common sense !!!
Like a previous poster said -I dont even think twice at the airport security checks-and thats everyone getting checked - not just random checks. (I always get stopped BTW and have to do the standing on one leg routine for the shoe check-not an easy feat with a rosy glow lol)

Sorry Cambus :-(
Shall I hang my head in shame now? I'll let ya tar and feather me if you like, then I'll walk the streets wearing a sandwich board ringing a bell yelling "I'm a scaremonger" if ya like......
Alternatively, I do have half a packet of Jaffa cakes here, you open to a bit of bribery?;-)

Gromit So your argument is that you don't know whether these powers have prevented such crimes so why bother? There's every reason to bother since it may just prevent something as appalling as 7/7 happening again.
I agree that blowing people to smithereens has always been against the law, but as far as I'm aware, terrorist bombers never did care very much for the law.

Drisgirl, I usually get stopped at airports too. I don't know whether it's because I look suspicious, or whether the security person wants an easy day and I just look like a friendly type who won't complain. Whatever the reason, I never mind. I'm just pleased that security is heightened. I'm stepping onto that plane - and I want to step off it again.
