What is this all about? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgow_an d_west/7072882.stm
Surely it must be illegal to stop and search people for no apparent reason? How did they manage to pass that?

i don't see the problem? If you've nothing to hide, does it matter?
Question Author
Of course it matters BOO. For a start there's the inconvieniance, potential embarrassment, community relations, missed trains, wasted police time and resources, and it's completely unnecessary. We've all seen what happens to would be terrorists in Glasgow, they will be severly malkied if they try anything. There is absolutely no need to adopt this when the public feel perfectly safe. What happened to evidence based policy making? They've written a law to please themselves!
i don't understand your objections here...

Inconvenience- what a minute or so search is an inconvenience?

Potential embarrassment- why?

Community relations- with whom? The police have not said they'll be targeting any particular race have they?

Missed trains? Why? They won't be stopping everyone, should imagine whoever does get stopped will be lose a few minutes maximum.

So you'd rather the police didn't try to do whatever they could do deter would be bombers?

its for our own protection and if there is anti-terror campaign on the go, then they probably are looking for something specific and possibly know stuff we dont

im up for it
might save many many lives

people are in way too much of a hurry these days and just thinking about themselves if they object
There is no end to the freedoms that can be curtailed with a Prevention of Terrorism Act.

They are usually pre-written and then in the aftermath of an atrocity are passed without much debate and in an air of knee jerk anger.
Yes, terrible abuse of human rights. It happens to me everytime I go to an airport.

Yes BOO, you have got it in one. Why can't you understand my arguments? I'm not going to repeat myself, I have just listed a bunch of legitamate reasons. It's not my fault you have discredited them without a thought. Where are the bombers that you speak of? The last time I checked Islam meant "love." The tabloids have worked too many people in this country into such a paranoid state it beggars belief. See previous comments about malkying people. I'm off to Ju Jitsu to ready myself for war. lol!
I didn't speak of any bombers, I know any! (well none that I'm aware of, though Mr Parson's up my road looks dodgy, he goes shoping with a rucksack everyday............)

Love your statement "Islam meant love", that'll keep me chuckling until bedtime, cheers for that!
It is under the Prevention odf Terrorism Act 2000 Section 44 powers (stop and search). And if you are innocent you have nothing to fear, unless...

The elderly man ejected from the Labour Party conference a couple of years ago was stopped and search under the prevention of Terrorism 2000 Act.

Or the case of Sally Cameron
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/artic le579334.ece
stopped and search while walking on a cycle path.

Or even people protesting about an International Arms Show

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4786456.stm

And all in the name of Freedom.
BTP resources are very limited.
Using officers this way, is only leaving the door open for an increase in crime on other parts of the network.
Besides, how do they manage to understand one another?
Just wanted to say that further to Skreech's comment that "the public feel perfectly safe", that I don't... sorry but I haven't felt safe in places like train stations or other such places for a long time ... and my fear is not based on what I hear on the news but rather what I hear from friends and family every other week - about the random attacks on people and the crimes we are up against every day - not just terrorism. It is perhaps a sorry tale of our times and whilst I hate feeling this way I cannot help it... therefore I have to say that whilst we should live in a world where searches should be ridiculous - we don't.... and better safe than a few hundred or even thousands of people be sorry. I wish I could vote in favour of banning such nanny state laws but I can't - I have to say I would be happy to be searched and go on hoping that perhaps one day we'll look back and say can you beleive how different it all was back then... I thinks searches are sad but necessary in our world today :-(
they misheard instructions in the case of Sally Cameron, Gromit, they were supposed to be checking psychopaths not cycle paths.

Sorry BOO, I was sure I'd read a literal translation that the word literally means "love" in arabic but it actually means one who obeys god. Don't know where I got my previous translation from, perhaps Allah means love, literally translated God is often described as love in christianity.
Law Lord, Lord Bingham:
"It is an old and cherished tradition of our country that everyone should be free to go about their business in the streets of the land, confident that they will not be stopped and searched by the police unless reasonably suspected of having committed a criminal offence.

"So jealously is this guarded that it has become a constitutional principle... ....anti-terrorist provisions of the 2000 act were among the exceptions to the rule."
Skreecheeboy this is what the Qur'an which Islams follow has to say....

The Qur'an says: "Fight and slay the pagans [Christians] wherever ye find them and seize them, confine them, and lie in wait for them in every place of ambush" (Surah 9:5)

Yes well- that's reassured me!
go boo !!!!

There was quite a lot of smiting in the Bible last time I looked, which admitedly was quite a long time ago.
the Bible is not totally tolerant of other faiths

Deuteronomy 14:6-10
"If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is of thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. Thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the Lord thy God."

Deuteronomy 17:2-5 (NIV)
"If a man or woman living among you in one of the towns the LORD gives you is found doing evil in the eyes of the LORD your God in violation of his covenant, and contrary to my command has worshiped other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars of the sky, and this has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate it thoroughly. If it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, take the man or woman who has done this evil deed to your city gate and stone that person to death."

Leviticus 24:16
"Anyone who blasphemes the name of the LORD must be put to death. The entire assembly must stone him. Whether an alien or native-born, when he blasphemes the Name, he must be put to death."
lol ok point taken (gits!)....lol

Are there still Christians who follow The Bible to the letter and will willingly commit suicide by bombing other innocent people? And i don't mean the odd fruitloop, I mean people, plural?

I don't wish to come across as racist here, I'm not really (honest) but I just think it's naive to believe that there isn't a scarily large sector of the Islam faith who are quite frankly barking and who are willing to commit atrocities in the name of Allah.
