What is this all about? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgow_an d_west/7072882.stm
Surely it must be illegal to stop and search people for no apparent reason? How did they manage to pass that?

Police are given new powers to conduct random searches of people's homes without the need for reasonable suspicion or specific intelligence.

"If you've got nothing to hide, what's the problem?" said one single mother as a detective ransacked her knicker drawer. "If they search a million homes and find one suspect package, then it's been worthwhile."

Curfews are extended so that citizens are only allowed out of their homes between the hours of midday and 3pm.

"Yes, it's inconvenient but it's nothing compared to the danger of another 7/7 and I still have 3 hours a day to do my shopping," said one member of the public. "Besides, when you fly anywhere, you're expected to check in and then stay in the airport for two hours before the flight. At least here, I'm in my own home."
I find it incomprehensible that people have been on here saying "nothing to hide nothing to fear" today.

When the Menenzes verdict came out!

Nothing to hide no problem.

I'm with Gromit and Ruby on this.

About right, Sweep2K. This 'If you have nothing to hide, etc..............'. that people keep quoting amazes me. The scenario you quote isn't fantasy, it could very well be fact sooner than we expect.
A copper stops me and says excuse me sir we are carrying out random searches can I can you a quick frisk.

What is so bad about that?

They are doing the terrorists' job for them.

A terrorists aim is tio instill terror. If I was on a train and the man next to me was stopped and searched under the terrorism Act, it would make me extremely nervous. Possibly scared. I would be anxious and think twice about using the train in future. I would not be reassured, quite the opposite.
So no police presence in more reassuring than a police presence?

yeah right.

So when I go down broad Street in Birmingham at 2.30am it's better for there to be no police than a few highly visible officers?
Just to remined everyone - you are NOT going to be killed by a terrorrist attrocity, you have more chance of winning the lottery
Rev, according to the local news the most dangerous thing in Broad Street are the 2 slippery stars on the pavement!!!! Mind how you go!x ;-)
paulo - words of wisdom. The terrorists are getting the reaction that they want!

Rev I don't think Gromit is referring to ordinary policing in city centres and I don't think their presence at 2.30am will deter any terrorism anyway.
Like me feet touch the floor. I hover lol
Rev,

I am not advocating no police presence. If fact I would like to see more. Highly visible is fine.

Why are your local police not stopping and searching potential terrorists at 2.30am on Broad Street?

Where Glasgow leads today, the rest will follow tomorrow.
They stop and search so whats the difference?

I for one think that if there is a police presence it acts as a deterent.

You get stopped and searched at airports, please tell me what the difference is.
At an airport you go through a barrier and your baggage is x-rayed as is everyone elses.

In Glasgow, you are singled out, told that you are a potential terrorist, and searched in public.
and there will be a whole section of the public that will be singled out for searching and if that isn't violating human rights............................?
