I am pleased that retired Gurkhas now have the right to live in the UK. They have served in the British Army for many years and its about time this country showed its respect for them.

Here here!
excellent news, I'm very pleased.
Totally agree with you tiggerblue.
I thought you'd be enjoying the news, Lonnie, and quite right too
Agree totally, they should have had this decision in the first place.
About time to.
I really really can't understand why they were refused in the first place, war heroes fighting for our country - so, donning the cynic's hat - is there a downside? There can't be huge numbers involved surely?

There aren't that many of them Blessed. In all the time I've worked for the Immigration Service (BIA) I've only ever endorsed a handful of their passports.
This is good news. Just over 3 million will be arriving from Nepal with their families, I hope we give them all a warm welcome. They will certainly add colour to the rich variety of nationalities in the UK.

Loads of passports to be stamped tiggs, should keep you busy for a while.
3 million? How does that work?

No way can that number of Nepalese ever have served in the British Army. Am I missing something?
That could be the downside you mentioned, blessed.
Are you saying that Nepalese who have never served in the British Army are hereby entitled to citizenship?

And once again, how does that work?
I'm delighted. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to these brave men who have supported our country over many decades and in several wars. But the fight isn't actually over yet. While the High Court as made this ruling, we have yet to see whether in fact, the government will implement it. That is why Joanna Lumley has launched this petition to get 1 million signatures to present to Downing Street to put pressure on the Government. Remember the victims of the Equitable Life scandal? The High Court ruled that the Government had acted unfairly against them, but the Government still hasn't compensated them either yet. So please sign the petition and encourage your friends to do so.

Blessed, not sure how it works, but I don't think you can expect them to leave their families behind. Maybe tigger can answer that one, I never thought it would be controversial.
Can someone please explain to me in a few short words why someone who has served in the British Army (e.g. a Ghurka) should NOT be granted British citizenship?

WHAT AM I MISSING HERE?

There must be reasons for the reluctance so far, what on earth are they?
Blessed, it could be the numbers involved and their colour.
The Nepalese can be quite dark skinned, I wonder if AOG is aware of this.
UK does not need anymore immigrants and they should stay in their own country. If they are allowed to come they will be a burden on our national health service, and as the country slides into recession and unemployment rises, they will no doubt be limping to the benefits office as clapped out soldiers tend to do, not to mention being given houses because they will never be able to buy one. Yet another language our town halls will have to spend thousands translate our draconian wheelie bin regulations into. Next thing you know, they will be importing their disgusting and dangerous food.
that's a point, Gromit. Will they be demanding to get their war wounds treated on the NHS?
I understand now. I also understand that as ethnic minorities become ethnic majorities that their taxes in turn will help to sustain the underprivileged minority groups, even if they are by that time White.
