Gay couple in B&B

I see that the gay couple who were refused a double room in a B&B have won their case and been awarded £1800 damages. I'm not sure of the background facts, so can't really comment, but the hoteliers were found to have acted unlawfully. Does anyone know which law they actually broke and what the damaged were in respect of?

I wasn't referring specifically to you, more to the b&b owners, I used 'raging' as a little play on words because it's usually used when talking about particularly camp gay men.
To answer your 2nd question they shouldn't have the right to treat one person differently to another based solely on the grounds of sexual orientation. Your 1st question is a bit too vague because it would surely depend on me refusing you in the 1st place, to what I was refusing you and on what grounds.

Whether someone agrees with every law is irrelevant. You can protest, you can argue, you can lobby, but if you choose to break that law, then you will be taken to court.

Simple as that really.

If you open your home as a commercial enterprise, then you are bound by the Equalities Act.

Say if this couple had a home bakery business...do you think they could flout every health and safety law, because it's their own kitchen?

Yes, it's their own home, but it's a B&B - so should they be exempt from fire safety procedures?

You cannot simply cherry pick the rules you're going to run your business by.

So, the it has been ruled that the law was broken, whether you agree with it or not. Does anyone know on what basis the £1800 damages was calculated? Does it cover the couple's costs for alternative accommodation, the court case, or what?

I saw on Sky News that the couple could've been awarded up to £5000. In cases such as these, the judge will take into account factors such as intent, hurt feelings and costs. You would have to check the court summary to ascertain how the figure was arrived at.

Amazing, innit? I might get "done" at a workplace for wearing a crucifix in case it upsets other, non Christian, Faiths? Or, there again, unless I'm of the Sikh Faith, I'd get "done" for not wearing a crash helmet whilst riding a motorbike on a public road? Or, I could get reported at a school sports day if I was caught photographing my own kids even? Or, if I'm "seen" to somehow offend another pixel on here I could be banned? Or, if I refused to pay my council tax on a point of principle, I could be imprisoned, whilst persistent criminals hardly ever are? Or, if my deeply held religious views are considered "offensive" to individuals who indulge in unnatural acts, I could end up also with a criminal record, and be fined into the bargain? Or, I could be a convicted kiddie fiddler given anonimity, succour and funds at public expense despite having been convicted of one of the most heinous crimes imaginable to man?

Not only that, I could be a perpetrator of vile acts yet still be seen by lots of individuals as some kind of "victim"?
