So England's wicket keeper has found the need to announce that he is gay, does that mean the others will now have to announce they are heterosexual?

In the scheme of things why do homosexuals think it is so important to announce their sexuality to all and sundry?

As many newspapers delight in dragging anyone in the public eye out of the the closet, perhaps he felt it was better to announce it in a controlled manner..........to jump rather than be pushed ?

I get a bit tired of this actually - are we supposed to say, 'Well Done?' You are what you are, and as there is no stigma these days why do they still think it's got to be 'announced' like it makes a difference?

I think it's good to have 'out' homosexuals in sport as it's such a predominantly macho world. While it is such a rarity it can only be a positive thing for a recognised sportsman to 'come out' and for his team mates and peers to support them.
If he felt he had to lie about it, and doesn't any more, then it shows the situation is improving.

I think we can all be glad that we no longer have a society where it really does matter that much. Imagine in the days where youngsters where tormented by their feelings

I suppose 'coming out' has elevated his Worldwide status from , "who the heck is Steven Davies?", to, "oh yeah, he's that gay cricketer" ... Aside from that, if he can play the game, who cares what he likes banging?

I half heard this on the news, and wrongly thought they were talking about Steve Davis the snooker player, and for a few seconds I was thinking that perhaps he wasn't as dull as I previously thought.

I agree with pa_ul3 on this. Having a role model, especially in sport or indeed in any high profile profession, may be helpful for adolescents and young men who are gay and finding it difficult to come out or be acceted.

Ofcourse a persons sexuality should not be an issue but sadly even though society has moved on a lot it still is.

if it means some young lad, who's into his sports which makes him feel less comfortable about accepting his sexuality, feels like it is possible to be an openly gay sportsman, then this announcement would be worthwhile.
It doesn't bother me in the slightest, but it may be life changing for someone else so where's the harm!
