So England's wicket keeper has found the need to announce that he is gay, does that mean the others will now have to announce they are heterosexual?
In the scheme of things why do homosexuals think it is so important to announce their sexuality to all and sundry?
/// He said he could no longer bear to lie about his sexuality. ///
/// "I'm comfortable with who I am - and happy to say who I am in public," ///
/// I feel it is right to be out in the open about my sexuality. If more people do it, the more acceptable it will become. That must be a good thing. ///
Do they think that they are that important, and that anyone is at all interested in their sexuality? I know that I am not.

"does that mean the others will now have to announce they are heterosexual? "
Because if he doesn't come out then people will just assume he's straight (especially in sport). You might say, 'who cares?' but how would you feel if, for example, everybody assumed you were gay? Wouldn't you want to clear the air?
Plus, most other sportsmen -do- implicitly announce their heterosexuality all the time when they pose for photoshoots with their spouses/partners etc. Nothing wrong with that at all, but because homosexuality is less common the media tend to assume you're straight unless you say otherwise.
And as others have said, it's just nice symbolically. The fact that we're actually able to have public figures come out as gay and not get any trouble for it is a good sign that we're making progress as a more tolerant society.
