I would like to take this opportunity to address some rather ill-informed posts on the recent thread on the gay cricketer who came out.
Does it matter? Yes - it does, because gay kids need to have a variety of role models. It makes them feel better about themselves.
Why do gay people feel the need to announce their sexuality? Well, why do straight people do the same? Think about it! Every wedding you've ever been to ha been a declaration of heterosexuality. Every time a bloke picks up a copy of FHM and points out how much he fancies Cheryl Cole - isn't he shouting about his sexuality?
Please continue to raise questions on sexuality, but try to think before writing, because some posts come across as the product of extreme stupidity.
I agree, if all children look up to sport personalitys and celebrities for guidance why shouldnt there be a gay person for a child to relate to!
It seems the norm is to be straight and this is automatically assumed of all celebs, for many gay celebs there is the fear of losing jobs/comercial oppurtunities etc.
Whats the matter with a cricketer being gay, there should be celebrities who bat for both teams :D
xD
I agree with your sentiments, but wonder how many choose to come out, as opposed to doing it under threat from some tacky newspaper who have a grim "story".
I'm sure they get questioned a lot about relationships during interviews which would be awkward if they had not come out, part of the coming out is the freedom to no longer live a lie.
The Truth Here
Why should Gay people only hang out in gay bars, cant they be in a realtionship without being segregated from the straights, Myabe gay people want to walk around a park holding hands, go for a romantic meal sm e for gay celebrities, they need to come out before the papps decide to make a malicous rumour out of their sexuality. Why shoudl they live a lie, if all gays lived a lie ther wouldnt even be Gay bars!
xD
Just because a gay person, celeb or not , chooses to come out doesnt mean his close friends didnt know before. I, a heteresexual, have had a friend for years who I knew was gay but he didnt want the world to know because of the stigma attached to it. Now that celebs are coming out I think more ordinary people are prepared to.
I think there have been a number of celebrities over the years who have not come out until their private life has been compromised as they wish to have a successful career made and paid for by the same public they fear will reject them if the truth came out.
I didnt say you necessarily said they must but you did say
"How about they go to a gay bar and meet other gays have you not got any near you"
I was merely pointing out that they should have the oppurtunity to meet gay people outside of a gay bar and to do this celebs need to be confident and comfortable with who they are rather than worry about the paps.
Alexandered is totally right if celebs are more willing to "come out" it will encourage more uncelebs too!
xD
ok now im confused, whos Jack and the mob
lol
society is to judgemental being seen going into gay bar is going to lead to an assumption about your sexuality
xD
It ultimately comes down to the fact that a celeb being straight is not news, a celeb being gay is news... unless everyone already knows it. If a celeb wants to just go about their lives without being harrassed by paps working on a 'is he of isnt he' story then they can come out and set the record straight and carry on with their lives how they choose.... unless they go for another celeb then they're in for a life of it!
