Merry Christmas all members of AB's Mad over fifties!
Tonight is the "Christmas in July" Ball! For tonight's festivities we have opened the Ballroom it is festooned in fairy lights and evergreens, The Minstrels have been practising Carols all week and are down in the vestibule waiting to serenade club members as they draw up in the sleighs (don't ask how we managed snow in July - it wasn't easy)
Tonight's tailcock (in keeping with the Pantomime fancy dress theme) is the Principal Boy - an intriguing mix. On the hot plate we have a traditional Christmas dinner, turkey or goose and all the usual trimmings, on the pudding trolley of course there is Christmas pudding and Sherry Trifle, and of course our world famous volly vonts and canopies. As a special treat we have booked local mobile disco "Sounds of Music" to provide the music for dancing. Later on there will be eggnog and Christmas cookies by the roaring fire in the Great Hall, and carol singing around the tree led by the Tower's Minstrels, there is a fair chance of Santa popping in with some pressies! If we can get the snow to last there are plans for a snowman building competition (carrots, scarves, hats and coal will be provided)
Igor has polished his chains to perfection and he will be joined by his new minion Frank (who has just acquired his very first chain)
As always, the hot tub is bubbling away on the North Tower (mini bar has be replenished) the indoor swimming pool is ready for use (cossies in the changing rooms for guests who require them) We may or may not have fireworks to round off our evening, it depends on the weather.
A warm welcome awaits all who dare enter these portals

Sleighs at midnight

Yes nungate, I couldn't work out why they raved about that film.
Hello Mr Bear. Pleased to make your acquaintance.
Apologies for my attire, I don't usually dress like this

You may have guessed that I'm not a lover of sloppy romantic pot boilers then Tony (though I am not averse to the old black and white classics) I prefer a bit more action, and I do enjoy those comic book films, like Iron Man and the Avengers and all that stuff, and sci fi not averse to a Romcom if it's funny and not mawkish, and I love those old musicals
Nungate, surely you cried at 'The Green Mile'!
Question Author
em er, Mammar, Polar Bear is Madame Polar Bear, I keep hoping she might bring some polar bear cubs along to one of our meetings but so far she hasn't (baby PB's are so cute!)
I not only cried enough to fill a Tailcock bucket but shouted abuse and even swore at one famous scene.
I can never watch it again.
I'm sure some women not you nungate watch certain films knowing that it will make them cry.
Oops! My bad!
Madame PB, you don't happen to be married to a certain Bear Grylls, do you?
You can bring him along any time you like.
Question Author
Nope - didn't actually see that one. There are so many films that I ought to see but somehow they just don't appeal to me. Maybe it's due to me being a bit on the serious side that I let rip with daft rubbish and silly entertaining stuff at the cinema and on tv. I did get ribbed by the family when I went daft to see Titanic - they got me wrong. They asked why did I want to see it and I told them I wanted to see what happened (I know the boat sank) what I really meant was I wanted to see what the fuss was all about - so I've seen it and couldn't care less if I never saw it again
Question Author
I'm assuming the crying was over the Green Mile Mammar? I shall try to watch next time it pops up on Sky movies - was it written by the same guy that wrote Shawshank Redemption? There's a film I love
Nungate, how I agree. I just felt like that was several hours of my life I could never get back.
I was also told I would love 'Mama Mia' and felt the same way. Why did such splendid actresses agree to do it? I blush for Julie Walters.
Oh, Nungate, it was indeed.
I can sniffle even thinking about it
Question Author
Haven't seen Mamma Mia either, a friend gave me the dvd as a gift (I already had one never watched it yet either) so I gave the new one to Queenie - plan to sell mine off with a few others, once I get organised
Question Author
Have you seen The Help by any chance? Good film, Queenie and I were laughing like drains at one point!
Good decision, Nungate dear.
Have the others gone to play Snowballs without us?
Poor ole Polar must be melting in this heat wave we're having. I think you had a stroke of genius arranging the snow. Did you, like most Mums, go to Iceland?
I haven't but I might add it to my Lovefilm request list on your recommendation
Hey you lot, c'mon I've been outside building a snowman.
Question Author
Only when Queenie was tiny - then I had a talk to myself that some of this frozen/ready made stuff wasn't as good or as plentiful as the stuff I made myself and I stopped going!
Queenie and her Dad have just arrived home from Berwick! I wonder if this referendum goes against my wishes and we get independence will they need passports to pop down to speedway meets? (I'm anti independence)
Yes nungate, I will be demanding to see Queenie's passport in Sept !.
Coming, Tone.
Me and Nungate have been critiquing films.
If you've made a snowman I shall have great fun pretending it is Meryl Streep and hefting hoofing great snowballs at it
