Nativity Play Cancelled In Fear Of "offending" Muslims

just read in the news about a primary school cancelling their nativity play in case it offends the muslim students.

Am I missing something here or this the most unbelievable thing I ever heard?? Regardless of the fact that the child may have come from another country of their parents/grandparents have come from another country - they have still come from another country and if our customs and beliefs "offend" them I know where they should go!

Am I alone here?

Richie, you use American English. You use expressions which are common there but not here. That's why somebody thinks you are from North America.

Forgive me for saying so, but whichever English you use, you appear not to be able to read and understand a simple account in either of them. Four years ago , the Nativity play was moved so that Muslim children could take part in it. Is that correct or not? Let's repreat that "so that Muslim children could take part". That is, take part in a Christian festival.

Over here, unlike in the US,state schools celebrate Christmas with a nativity play.This has the curious result that Joseph may be played by a boy called Mohammed (as happened in my daughter's school).Nobody minded, least of all that boy's parents. And we are happy that our children learn about Eid (and Hannukah too, which Jewish festival always happens near Christmas)

If you wish, you may bring the Holocaust into any post you make. Jews are pleased that nobody forgets . I suspect, though I may be wrong, I concede, that you mention Hitler and/or the Holocaust in every thread you join.

And to add to Fred's comments, Jesus is seen as one of the Prophets to both the Jewish and Muslim faiths, if not the Son of God.

Just to clarify that. Islam does consider Jesus to be a prophet of Islam, and believes him to have been born of a virgin through God’s will, although he is not considered to be the son of God. Judaism, however, does not recognise him as a prophet or as anything other than an ordinary human being.

You know I don't think this was a "nativity play" - they've become quite rare outside of religious sponsored schools and I'm not sure muslim famillies would be comfortable with their children being in one any more than many Christian famillies would be comfortable with their children taking part in a muslim festival.

I suspect school play moved to allow muslim famillies to take part seemed less incendary than the DM were looking for and by terming it "Nativity play" they were able to set up a Christian vs Muslim narrative that suited their rather odious agenda

Also managed to fool a lot of gulible Mail readers I suspect

Jake, the headline in your link also terms it 'nativity'. It was possibly a pantomime performance based on the story of Christmas, which a lot of schools do now, but whatever it was, it wasn't cancelled for the reason claimed.

Perhaps it's of no consequence, but the "library picture" of Moslems at prayer in that report seems to be rather irrelevant (if not perhaps quite as amusing as the picture of Battersea Power Station in an unrelated piece about the proposed building of a mosque).
You really can see where Viz get their ideas from ("Here's a teapot pictured yesterday" ) :-)

on a different note, last year and year before i watched muslim channels from ME.... the reporters on the very muslim muslim channel were out and about in i believe iraqi kurdistan or maybe irani kurdistan, they were in a shopping mall interviewing people who were out shopping for christmas... it was all friendly and fun..... the muslim channel had a christmas tree logo (yeah work that one out!) and christmas baubles with snow sprinkling down...... obviously they didnt think there was a risk of offending the probably 85% + muslims in the country

My grandaughter (8) is in the school Nativity Play in Peterhead. There are 12 different languages spoken in the school and children of different faiths. ALL are taking part. My grandaughter is singing a hymn in Polish in the "songs from around the world" part. So far as I am aware, no parents have objected to this.

You don't know that. You're guessing. I actually went to see a school play this week which could easily have been considered 'pantomime'. Nevertheless, it was based on the Christmas story. Best not to make assumptions because that's exactly what the OP has done - and he's wrong.
