Many would do anything to abandon any principle, just to stay alive.

Very drole Khandro, even I accept the concept of god, it's the existence of god that presents a few difficulties.Yer man Wittgenstein was pulling someone's leg.
Khandro, //Not according to St Paul, see Karen Armstrong's book on him.//

Whose word are you going to believe? The organ grinder's or the monkey's.

(I've seen Karen Armstrong's book along with most of her other books. The same applies to her).
I can't quite see why our views have to be informed by Karen Armstrong or anyone else of her ilk. Can we not think for ourselves. If god does not exist then her views are as relevant as last winters snow.
Khandro places great store by things that other people say or have said - but only if they say what he wants to hear.
Naomi, I had that very same thought when I was typing my last posting. Searching for views that coincide with your own is no way to obtain balance..or truth.
Jom, I get the distinct impression that some people are searching for neither.

A bit like a musician who is good at reciting from sheet music but unable to create tunes of their own. Easily able to impress non-musicians with virtuosity but seldom original and not comfortable with being asked to be spontaneous.

Actually, I find new riffs often emerge as a result of slightly incompetent performing; making a mistake and finding the result pleasing. A perfectionist will never let themself make such mistakes.

Hypo, I was at an event with an artist acquaintance once, a jazz band was playing. He couldn't fathom how they were playing such complicated music without sheet music.
@jomifl

I was initially amused by that but, eventually, annoyed. Has he never been to a rock concert or something? Ninety-odd minutes of prog rock with no sheet music in sight ought to do his head in.

As for improvisation on the fly, try this:-
(Jeff Beck v. a Blackbird)

impressive, I get lost that far up the fretboard. Ironically the guy was a regular visiter to Glasto but his interest was in heart strings rather than guitar strings and another kind of scoring than music notation.

You can not just see it,can you. This world under Satan is like a sinking ship. Jehovah has provided the true Christian congregation as a “lifeboat” for his faithful servants. As they head toward the new world, they can have full confidence in this promise.

“The world is passing away and so is its desire, but he that does the will of God remains forever.” (1 John 2:17)
^^^^ Deluded fool!!

Why on earth would I quote for support someone with whom I disagree?

//A bit like a musician who is good at reciting from sheet music but unable to create tunes of their own.//

The person you think is creating a "new tune" is probably succeeding in hiding its source.
Khandro, //Why on earth would I quote for support someone with whom I disagree? //

You wouldn't, but I don't understand why you think whatever anyone you quote says in this context adds weight to your argument. It doesn't. Karen Armstrong's opinion is no more valid than anyone else's.
// Karen Armstrong's opinion is no more valid than anyone else's.//
There is a big difference between 'opinion' and 'informed opinion'. Every fool has an opinion.
/There is a big difference between 'opinion' and 'informed opinion'/

informed by what?
Karen Armstrong may have read every Rupert Bear annual published, it doesn't make her an expert on brain surgery.
//Karen Armstrong may have read every Rupert Bear annual published, it doesn't make her an expert on brain surgery.//

No, but it might make her more of an expert on Rupert Bear than you are,
(unless of course you have read them too).
Khandro, I see that you have understood my point and have chosen to ignore it.
Khandro, Jom’s question is a good one. Why are you avoiding it?
