For, against, or it's no one elses business what you do behind closed doors?

I don't see the issue with striking the bottom of your own infant. There is a difference between spanking a child, and then child abuse.

Oh Spath really, I never thought you were a troll until this, what on earth?
Spath, you are young and idealistic and NOT a parent.
Trust me, your views will change when/if you become a parent.
// or it's no one elses business what you do behind closed doors?//
do we perhaps read what we have written

you mean it is OK murder your children so long as you do it in lcoked house - I really dont think so ...
but hey this is AB
and it has been pretty crazy day on AB so far
( as long as you think it is moral you can do what you like includinng shoot people qua the usual suspects)
Any sensible answer you now provide will be meaningless because you have used a cartoon to back up your argument!
Being hit aka smacked/spanked at home and caned at school was educational for me......taught me that my parents were wrong and I could do it better and that nuns were evil creatures who just enjoyed hurting children......x

teacher threw a black board rubber at a kid - missed and smashed a window

and his eyes went like Tomz in Tom and jerry .....
"...a bend over the knee" has been mentioned several times. That sounds like outright humiliation to me. Is that what you'd do, spath? Humiliate your own child?
This whole thread has left me speechless.
We parents have all had moments when we see our child do or say something...and we see ourselves. Sometimes it's funny...
I've seen children misbehaving in such a way that I *knew* they were mimicking their parents...and it's not a pretty sight. That's what children do...imitate adults...because they think what their parents do is right and correct. And, the majority of the time, it is. But when parents are violent...how might the children turn out?
Personally against - our kids have never been physically punished - but if other parents choose to chastise their kids, then I don't see what it's got to do with me, anybody else, or the Government.

The vast vast majority of parents who physically chastise their kids will, I suspect, limit it to a tap on the backside or whatever. The parents who kick the crap out of their kids will continue to do so come what may.
Can I just say that there was a post earlier on that mentioned if you were not a parent then you don't really know.
Well just because I didn't manage to carry to full term a child doesn't mean I cannot comment on a parenting thread or know that it is wrong to slap a child!

Dare i come back to my own thread and continue to discuss the topic at hand ir are people going to stoop as low to call me a troll? Pathetic, i’l lleave it then.
I never hit my children. There are other punishments for misdemeanours.
It's not spanked, it's hitting!!
Grow up spath.
If you degrade your child and subject them to domestic violence, you have failed as a parent and a human being.

I was on the receiving end of humiliating abuse as far back as I can remember and it never leaves you. When your one and only parent is the one subjecting you to that abuse, it is the ultimate betrayal and a dereliction of parental duty of care.
Have to say I never agree with 'ladycg' but I do on this occasion
Only read the 1st couple of pages, but already I can tell i'm in the minority, lol.

Yes, ive smacked both my children when they were young for some misdemeanor they've done. Did I feel bad at the time? Yes! But then again so did they and they didn't do that particular wrong doing again either!

Does or did that make me a bad parent? I dunno, I assume most of you think that it did. I however stand by the thinking that it's had no long lasting damage to their wellbeing, they've both grown up up (well, ones still only 14, but going ok so far!) to be respectable well rounded people.
All getting a bit shrill again.
I agree with the post of BOO....a good and pragmatic answer borne out of experience and not by what I consider to be "high flown theorising" with little evidence.

spath has taken an unreasonable amount of antagonism verging on insults.
