No. They're tw&ts. It's an arbitrary and meaningless figure based on nothing other than a dislike of foreigners.
There is a sensible debate to be had about immigration levels, but this adds nothing to it.

Yes, am I am not racist in any way, I just feel it's about time we stopped being a soft touch to foreigners wishing to escape what is wrong in their own country and in the process making it worse for people born and raised here (and I don't mean just white anglo saxons).

You should only be allowed into this country if you can meet the following critieria:

1) You can speak fluent English
2) You already have a job lined up here
3) If no job, then you must be financially solvent and be able to look after yourself fincancially for a period of at least 5 years.
4) Agree to respect British customs and laws.
5) If the slightest law broken (even if just a parking ticket) then sent back to own country

I could go on and on, but I would be deemed as being racist!!!!!

1) What do you class as 'fluent English' - is a gcse 'c' grade okay? Does it have to be verbal or written?

2) How do you apply for a job from abroad if you are a builder?

3) This is obviously a contradiction to point two - but how much do you think you need to be financially solvent for 5 years. Surely it will also be different depending on the part of the country you want to live in (rent in London would be vastly different to say Lincoln). Therefore do people have to apply to live in a certain country and will they be able to move once here.

4) When you say British laws and customs, what customs are they allowed to obey - eg religious tolerance, freedom of speech etc?

5) So all laws are treated the same to immigrants? Will this be just for immigrants or are they to be classed as second class citizens. Incidentally a parking penalty charge notice is a civil law, not criminal. Are you suggesting that any civil laws that are broken should also be treated in the same way?

Just as a couple of extra matters - if an immigrant comes to the country and fulfils all of your criteria and then has a child, will you class the child as British? If so what happens if the parent then breaks a law and gets thrown out - does the child have a right to remain?

What happens to people such as Gurkhas who have fought for this country but can't speak fluent English?
