I thought this was a joke article from one of those spoof news sites when I first saw it. There are lots of questions here but I'll go with 'Does anyone think he'll actually be charged with the offence?'

Yes, that was his opinion - it might be yours too, but isn't the issue here about someone else's opinion of him voicing it, and particularly in such a public manner?

Ricky Gervais is well known for his atheism and his anti religion Tweets but I can't recall him Tweeting/joking about Islam and Muslims, his Tweets are mainly aimed at Christians and Christianity.

Do you think there is a reason for this?

Comedians appeal to their audiences, that's why they have audieces.

To assume that commedians not appealing to people who don't come their shows is some kind of fear avoidance, or political correctness is frankly a fatuous viewpoint.
