I thought this was a joke article from one of those spoof news sites when I first saw it. There are lots of questions here but I'll go with 'Does anyone think he'll actually be charged with the offence?'

if you carry on with your off-thread rudeness,

hughes Talbot - //andy, seen it dozens of times thanks. //

Seeing and understanding are not the same thing.

On reflection, that comment was uncalled for - please consider it withdrawn with my apologies.

I would not wish for yet another thread to spin off into the ether because of off-topic squabbling - shall we stop this now and either return to the topic, or at least stop the nonsense we have descended into.
Stephen Fry spoke the truth and I would happily repeat his words to any audience!!
If there is a God, he is one sick son of a ***!!
Yes, a return to topic would be great please! If I have to read any more boring squabbling I'll fall asleep on the job and then AB Editor will shout at me.
Ratter - I agree with what Stephen Fry said, but that does not mean it is actually the truth, in the literal sense of the word.

The evidence that God does not exist is - including Mr Fry's own damning monologue - considerable, but that does not make it a fact.
Even the Gardai think a prosecution unlikely.

//What happens next?

Gardaí said they cannot officially comment on an ongoing investigation. However a senior source added it was "highly unlikely" it would lead to a prosecution.

"Gardaí will speak to all those who are available for interview and a report will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions."//
andy-hughes, But if God does exist, the record indicates that Stephen Fry is absolutely right. God is an utter maniac.
naomi; You once again miss the point - as I've said earlier, it isn't about the existence or otherwise of God, it's about blasphemy
Khandtro, I haven’t missed the point – the discussion has moved to other areas – as discussion are apt to do – but I’ll talk about blasphemy if you like. The concept does not exist for non-believers like Stephen Fry - and me - and I don't think he'll be charged...... but he might.
Naomi - //andy-hughes, But if God does exist, the record indicates that Stephen Fry is absolutely right. God is an utter maniac. //

I can't argue with your agreement with Mr Fry's point.

I am sure that you and Mr Fry, and I, sincerely hope that our non-belief is the correct reaction - the notion that there actually is a God, and he does allow these things to happen - is simply to horrible to contemplate.
Fry ought to be charged. Not necessarily for blasphemy but because he is Fry. A smug, self-satisfied know-it-all git.To paraphrase Churchill's remark about Sir Stafford Cripps, 'There, but for the grace of God, goes God'.
jackdaw - I am confused by your post - surely your critique of Mr Fry would lead you to wanting him to be prosecuted, rather than not?
andy-hughes, //I am sure that you and Mr Fry, and I, sincerely hope that our non-belief is the correct reaction //

Don't be so sure. I don't know what Stephen Fry hopes for, but having read his biographies I suspect that, like me, it's not something he thinks about.
a-h, confusion comes easily to you. I'm sure most others will get my drift.
*post at 16.01 should read 'autobiographies'.
naomi // The concept [blasphemy] does not exist for non-believers like Stephen Fry - and me -//
Well bully for you, but I don't think that excuse would have held much water if you had offered it to the Grand Inquisitor, Torquemada.
Khandro, doubtless, but I wasn't in that position..... and dare I say it? Yes! What the hell! Times have moved on, and hopefully, so have most people's brains!
Good old Torquemada. He didn't mess about.
He did when he moved to Chelsea, Togo ... useless.

I see despite half a dozen '-answer-removed' andy's insult remains even though he apologised ...
