'Matereialistic' science has given us better health care...vaccines, eradication of certain diseases, anasthetics, anibiotics, pharmaceuticals, etc. Its given us instant communication with others via the internet, mobile phone, text, email and telecommunications and GPS systems. Its science that has enabled us to have food all year round and safe clean drinking water. Its science that allows us to predict the weather in advance and prepare for the worst of it. Its science that has utilised electricity so you can switch your light on and use your computer. Its science that has allowed us to board a jumbo jet and be on the other side of the globe in less than a day.

What has 'faith' in an unprovable deity ever given us?

What did the Romans ever do for us?
To many people faith gives them something, as you regularly make clear - it gives you nothing.

That doesn't matter.

Don't tempt me Baldric ;-)
I see faith as motivation, what ever works for ya. Gotta say it works because we’re here where we are today
Faith has given people an explanation of the futility of life. You are born , reproduce (some) and die. Our brains have developed so much we can't believe that that is that. We have to make up nice stories about heaven, beyond the veil, life after death, to give our lives some reason.

//To many people faith gives them something//
Not got a problem with that per se, I *do* have a problem when others tell me that Ive got to have a 'faith' as well.

Sorry but just couldn't resist...
Some people have faith in science. Science usually helps exaplain some spiritual things

Agreed AL. Unfortunetely for those that disagree with people with this view then hell awaits instead. (in Christianity and Islam at least)
I wouldn't dream of telling someone to get a faith, nor would I tell someone to ditch a faith - each to their own.
And to quote Ian Holm in Loch Ness "and wasn't it science that gave us acid rain?"
As for faith if you don't believe it will give you nothing but millions think it has.
Thankfully my Pagan beliefs do not recognise Hell or the devil. When you die you return back to mother earth. Mostly as fertiliser.....

//Some people have faith in science//
Rubbish. Empirical evidence is not faith.
If I switch on my light switch then I 'know' that my light is going to come on (barring a fault). That's not faith, that knowledge.

care to elaborate on that Spath, im intrigued?

What does exaplain mean please?
The truth remains the same whether you accept it or not.
Kick and rage against it but never change it.
The God you don't believe in will still be there long after you have dismissed Him.
Theland does that mean I will go to heaven? Even if I don't believe? or will I be going to the basement? Hell & brimstone forever?. What God preaches unconditional love then basically says believe me and I will give you eternal life, don't believe me and you go to Hell.....that's not unconditional love!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Question Author
//The truth remains the same whether you accept it or not//
Yes it does. But what makes you think that you possess 'the truth'?
Faith??
Question Author
AL, Theland starts to get uncomfortable with the notions of eternal torment.
Theland, are you a JW?
Question Author
AL Thelands been asked many times what Christian denomination he subscribes to and has consistently avoided answering.
