How do I limit the number of recently viewed items appearing on the Start List (using Windows XP) to save having to right click each one separately and then ‘remove from this list’? Internet Explorer and Outlook Express appear to be there by default but I could do without the rest.

I am using Windows 7 but think that the solution may be the same for XP. Right click somewhere on the toolbar at the bottom, click properties. Aaskbar window will come up saying taskbar and toolbar properties appears. Along the top of the box that comes up their should be a Start menu. Click on this and there should be a privacy setting which gives you the option of putting recently opened programmes on the start menu. If this is ticked, uncheck the box and this will solve the problem (hopefully)!
Right-click the start button and choose Properties
Click Customize
Select the Advanced tab
Uncheck "List my most recently opened documents"
Click Clear List
Click OK
Click OK again
^^ that applies to documents you've opend.
If you mean you don't want to see recently opened programs:

Right-click the start button and choose Properties
Click Customize
On the general Tab:
Set "Number of programs on Start Menu" to zero
Click Clear list
Click Ok
Click OK again
