laptop playing up...

evening all,
all day my laptop has been playing up, can anyone help please?
whatever im trying to do is slow and 'delayed' -
i try to type and the curser sticks and then a few seconds later the letters ive typed then all show up.
i try to scroll down a page it sticks and then whizzes past where i want to go because ive tapped too much because of the sticking,
everything i do is slow, sticking and delayed grrrrr,
ive tried turning the laptop off and back on,
ive turned the router off and on again,
ive ran a malwarebytes scan and that comes up as clear.
what else can i do please?
its not an old lappy, 9 months old and runs on vista.

Press ctrl + alt + delete, select task manager and then click on the processes tab when it opens. then click on the letters CPU in the column heading to sort the list by CPU usage (you may have to click twice to get highest at the top)

once you've done that just keep an eye on it, when it slows down the process taking all the computers resources will be at the top (probably showing 99% usage), then post back what it is.

right, the cpu lowest is 55% - is what you wanted me to look at..?



(processes 91 / physical memory 47% - at the bottom of the task manager box)

chuck, i hope i was looking at the right thing?
the highest was never near 99%, the highest flitting around 60ish%

but is anyone able to help me please, cus this laptop is driving me nuts...

is an anti-virus program trying to scan?
have you got hard drive indexing switched on?
check your add/remove programs tab and take off anything you never use.
run your virus-checker.
run disc defragmenter.
check your memory size.... Vista is hungry, you ideally need 2Gb ram.

run your virus-checker. - avg did its nightly scan at 9pm, resluts were all nil.
run disc defragmenter. - how do i do this please?
check your memory size.... Vista is hungry, you ideally need 2Gb ram. - 3gb ram (c drive half full / d drive 8th full)

If you are disconnect the laptop from the internet does the problem persist?

and hi and thanks to you too bibblebub, ive just tried it when im disconnected from the internet and all is fine, no problem.
Does the problem only occur when you are using an internet browser?

If so, which browser are you using? (I had a similar problem using Firefox which turned out to be due to one or two add-ons either because of their latest versions or conflicts with one of the recent updates of Firefox itself).

If not, then possibly a conflict between a latest update of firewall and anti-virus software.

That can be a problem with updates, programs that have worked ok for ages update themselves without always letting you know and you suddenly get conflicts with other software on your system.

igglepiggle - i just found the defrag thing, and apparently it does a scheduled defrag every week, last one was done on wednesday.
ive just started to do another now beings the laptop started playing up this morning.

(its driving me up the wall grrr lol ... its took aaaages just to type this message to you!)

even though the virus scan vhg and malware says the results are clear tamborine?

i know this sounds slightly everso thick lol, so please excuse me, but when you say browser, is that aol you mean? i dont go into 'internet explorer' i just open up aol and away i go .. sorry! ..
also - go into control panel; programmes; and delete any programs you don't need e.g. yahoo toolbars and the like. be careful you don't delete anything vital. also defrag the hard disk and free up space and remove things like music/pictures to an external drive or mp3 player as they take up loads of room. its really easy to get your laptop bogged down with crap you don't need on there and by removing it it should sppeed things up a bit. you can also change the performance speed to optimum to help this too. check the internet for tips to help with this x
If it got suddenly bad performance, its more than likely malware. If it only happens when your connected to the internet, that makes it even more so. Uninstall AVG and install another av programme. They dont all pick up the same malware. Avast! is good, and its free. Viruses follow the sun as computers are switched on, so if you are in the UK, avast! or kapersky are good for you as they will update their signatures before you log on. Stay off internet banking until you get this sorted, or check your statements religiously. (You need to uninstall AVG first - cos you cant have two av products installed at the same time, they will conflict with each other.) Hope this helps.

i will try what youve suggested. ive malware and avg on together, could that be causing a problem?
i will uninstall them both shall i and download the avast one?
go to aol & download Firefox as your browser. aol is full of updates that conflect & incur virus's. Firefox is more reliable & faster. I'll be back to see how you're doing.
no dont remove AVG - firefox will overwrite anything it doesn't need.

well, installing the firefox browser has certainly improved things 100%! - no more stalling and stop starting! - nice one :o))

*** soo, what happens now then? do i just sign into aol to get online and then open the firefox browser to mooch about online with?
but, can i ask - what about all my favourites i have stored over on my aol? i need to be able to access them easily...??***
