Absolutely not - although carried out for the same reasons - culture. Interestingly, one mother defended her decision to have her baby's ears peireced by saying they were both done at the same time - ' ..so less pain'. Actually, no, it's double the pain if you think about it - and why would you cause your baby ANY pain, never mind trying to minimise it by doing the...

Spoken in the spirit of a mature exchange of views.
You are very critical of people when your argument isn't very good

I am critical of people who think 'I'm right your wrong' is a valid contribution to a debate.

If you wish to continue the discussion, then please do join in, but blanket assumptions and denials lead us nowhere.
You're willing to concede that piercing a babies ear is not British culture then, andy?
OK.....posting from the cafe of my Club after getting the opinion of the Spanish ( males....no women allowed in the club except to wait on us ;-)>

These are not necessarily my views:

Nearly all female babies have their ears pieced within 2 weeks of birth.
The fathers couldn' t care a toss, but the mothers feel that it is important.
Yes, the babies cry, but don't all babies cry about something, but is soon forgotten.
The fashion now is not one puncture hole, but THREE.
Do they think it is mutilation......they asked if I was joking.

So it seems that opinions differ andy.

Talbot - //You're willing to concede that piercing a babies ear is not British culture then, andy? //

No - I think it is British culture.

It is too common to be considered not to be part of the way some British parents treat their children.
Andy I've denied nothing and made no blanket assumptions

I've stated my opinion backed up with my experience
Until such a time as a small baby can articulate... "Get off you rotten b'stard, that hurt!!!!" it will continue.

No

So despite of the comments on this thread (the vast majority of posters do not think it is acceptable) and the lack of infants with ear-piercings you are right ... I didn't expect any different to be honest!

I have never disputed that cultures other than ours - Spanish being a perfect example - indulge in this distressing practice far more commonly than we do here in the UK.

But that does not make it right does it?

Koreans on the whole eat more dogs and cats than UK citizens, but that doesn't mean that we should simply shrug and say that its perfectly OK - but that is an example, for another debate.

//Yes, the babies cry, but don't all babies cry about something, but is soon forgotten. //

True, but as a parent, I spent, and still do spend, as much energy as is necessary towards ensuring that my children don't cry about anything I can avoid - and that includes inflicting my perverse vanity on them as little ones.

Forgive me, I am confused by this - can you explain your point please?

andy.

\\\But that does not make it right does it? \\\

No it doesn't necessarily make it right............or wrong.

Right or wrong is often a matter of opinion..........for and against.
I get the impression, probably incorrectly that right is defined as your opinion and you may be right.
Sqad - //\\But that does not make it right does it? \\\

Often it is, but in terms of children being hurt deliberately, it is not a matter of opinion whether it is right, or at least it shouldn't be, I am sure you will agree.

//I get the impression, probably incorrectly that right is defined as your opinion and you may be right. //

Yes, you are incorrect - I think that 'right' in this instance is not hurting babies for no good reason - my opinion does not come into it.

Although that said, it would be a strange world if I, or anyone else, offered an opinion, and then followed it up by saying that I didn't think my opinion was right!

If I didn't believe my opinion was right, it wouldn't be my opinion would it?
andy.........you are right.
Sqad - I know!!!!!

LOL!

Canary.... God! yes. Worse than FGM.
It has garnered more replies than your average FGM thread.

Thank you folks for turning this into what is mainly an interesting and thought-provoking thread.

I should emphasise (for those who seemed to misunderstand my position, possibly deliberately in one or two cases) that I regard the answer as "No". I still believe it is unacceptable however.
