I hate to see it.
But as bad a FGM?........Absolutely not.
I don't think mothers should do it, but it is not as bad as FGM.
No.

Actually, no, it's double the pain if you think about it - and why would you cause your baby ANY pain, never mind trying to minimise it by doing the same thing twice!!!

How about not doing it at all?

Let's make it a golden rule - if you are going to punch holes in your infant - or cut pieces off her - why not wait until she is old enough to take herself to have it done, and then it's her decision?

That sounds like a plan.
I feel the same about under 16's having tattoos.
Baby is now more grown up than her mother...

Appalling.
not as bad but deffo in the same box....also circumcision.
Baby's ears have been pierced since the Egyptian times -maybe even before . I really can't see the News value in this other than KP's agent needing a bit more cash. Apart from that if the child at any time in the future decides she does not want pierced ears she just takes the earings out. Ears heal over fairly quickly.
so if its been done for a long time that’s ok then retrochic? So fgm is ok, Child brides, that’s okay, torture, that’s ok?

If I may come to retrochic's defence - stating a fact is not the same as condoning it - nor is expanding the imagined acceptance into other areas which are not under debate on this thread.

if you are referring to circumcision as a religious practice, then that has also gone on since biblical times - again I am stating a fact, not saying I agree with the concept!

In Western culture, there is circumcision for medial reasons - I am a recipient of that - and personally very happy about it.
Woodgang -I find you putting ear piercing into the same category as fgm and other atrocities disgusting.
Ear piecing as bad as FGM????????????

What an absolutely ridiculous and uninformed question to ask.

While I disagree with any such piecing, if the child does not later want to wear earnings, the very small holes will be practically invisible by the time she is an adult.
Andy - Exactly - One can state historically something has happened without condoning it.
Not a big deal and the baby would have felt little pain in the procedure ( although I do not know what method was used)
Not in the same category as mutilation.
Circumcision is done in North America as Default and religion has nothing to do with it. Most American men are circumcised at birth.
"I feel the same about under 16's having tattoos."

No comparison at all Melv- one's illegal to do or a start!

I'd like to echo Jack, I dislike ear piercing in babies and toddlers, but it's not in the same (horrific) league as FGM.

(mini Boo's having her ears pierced for the first time this coming summer holidays- at 11 n half and at her request- young enough in my opinion)
Retrochic - //Circumcision is done in North America as Default and religion has nothing to do with it. Most American men are circumcised at birth. //

I cannot speak for an entire continent's male population - but speaking personally, I think circumcised penises are more aesthetically pleasing.

That said, it's an opinion I have reached as an adult - I was seriously unimpressed with the surgery when I was thirteen!!

So as advised in my previous post - if someone is going to have their body modified, it should be done at an age where they can make an informed decision about what affects their bodies - and not visited on them by parents with wacky ideas about turning babies into fashion accessories.
A-G........"I think circumcised penises are more aesthetically pleasing."

To whom? I haven't been circumcised and have had no complaints.
