from about 8.00 - 10.00 for experienced, I the think is the going rate.
Thunderbird has the average there but it depends where you live. Here in the Derby area we can pay anything from 6.50 to 15 p hr depending on whether you live on the posh side of the city or not.

If you want a one off get a few estimates for the entire job & don't forget to ask whether that includes removal of waste if there's a lot of it. For a maintenance gardener you might find they charge a little less for regular work.

thanks for that, its just that i have embarked on a gardening job myself for a friend who has an established garden fairly near Gatwick airport in sussex but left to grow into a jungle! its been planted up really well and im basically trying to get the garden back into shape.
I love gardening, and have experience due to my own gardens i have owned in the past and im quiet knowlegeable...if there are things i dont know i have plenty of books. Anyway she is paying me 6.25 an hour and i do 6 hours a week :o)
So by what you have both said its about right i think :o)

If you go for a company, you can expect to be charged up to 20 ph which will include removal and disposal of any waste.
If you go for an experienced private gardener who's doing it on a saturday to suppliment his income, anywhere up to 12 ph is reasonable.

I charge around 10 when i can be bothered to do private work

I know it is for a friend (that can be awkward), but I think you are undercutting yourself.. I live in Sussex, and know a few people who undertake gardening (one guy ain't much cop actually) and he charges 10 hr. Most have regular work, as there are a lot of people out there that don't want the bother and are willing to pay between 10 - 15 hr..

Good Luck xxx
Hi Iz,
Good luck with the gardening job, I think if you like the way its been planted, you will enjoy restoring the garden to its former glory, having an exiting challenge is half the battle.
6.25 is just a bit more than what you would get if you was being paid by an agency, so thats not too bad!
All the best. T bird.

well i justify the pay as this is my first gardening job and we all need to start off somewhere, im hopeing i may get noticed and get more work and therefore will charge more :o)
Im really pleased with the garden ,so far have cleared an old border that was full of brambles and found some hidden plants that have now finally found light!
remember the pay is tax free too ;o)
