What is the cause of a burning tender sensation to the skin on the upper thigh? No redness itching or rash, just suddenly very tender and burning for no reason

I'd put money on a doctor labelling it as "idiopathic dysesthesia", which simple means 'an abnormal sensation of unknown origin' (a.k.a. "I haven't really got a clue").

Such burning sensations can be caused by a minor allergic reaction, anxiety, a compressed nerve (leading to 'mononeuropathy') and many other things.

I'd also put money on a doctor saying "It'll probably clear up spontaneously. Just keep an eye on it and let me know if doesn't get better, or if you experience any other symptoms".

Which part of the upper thigh is it on, if over the outer side then it could be Trochanteric bursitis.
