Judging by the invective already seen on this thread, no doubt this will be met with criticism. Probably the same amount of criticism he would have received by the very same people had he declared he almost certainly would not be taking paternity leave.

Not quite. I'm a lefty, and even I'm embarrassed by the actions of some people here. I mean Diddly can't help herself, so no surprise there, but others are laughable.
(I'm sure there will come a time when he does wind me up though, so we have that to look forward to). ;-)
