The number connection fills me with dread.
Have solved about half of the clues and found several clashes.

Apache4D, you haven't by any chance made the mistake that myself and various others had in 26 across? Look back just a handful of posts in the thread.

It sounds like you have the moving object formed by the intersection of 40 and 27. You also have the last 2 letters of what it moves into, so perhaps 26 is the problem ?

I did early on perserverer but luckily never got as far as entering it.....

Intersections are as follows

CAPS = contribution from down clues, lower case from Across

20/26 letters available [LoEh] (deliberately jumbled ;) )
27/26 [lhL]
27/40 [Lba] again jumbled ;)

I know what I'm aiming for, just evading me, perhaps i've got some other contributing factors incorrect, however am normally meticulous in checking my answers before they go anywhere near the grid. Thanks again, really annoying to get so far (loved the logical construction of the numbers confirming the answers etc) and fall short!

I haven't even finished the grid, though I've been away for a week. Still got 16 & 19A to do - do feel that 19A is hardly fair as there's only 1 unch there.

Don't yet get the 3x3 region, though the last bit is fairly obvious.

Apache4D, I think you've probably got 26A slightly wrong as I don't have a clash at 26/27.

Thanks for all your help guys, unfortunately for me, everything you guys say suggests that all of my four original answers are indeed correct (26 and 27 definitely), I just can't get them all to intersect.....Thanks anyway, without literally spelling things out and spoiling it for others who may still be working I best leave it there.

At least I know that my four answers were correct (just can't sort the clashes at 27/40 and 20/26, didnt have one at 26/27 was the only one I was happy with!)

I'll be sure to post and let you know what stupid error i've made, or blindingly obvious manipulation i've missed....off to check my original grid for transcription errors. Cheers!

Your earlier reply suggests that you have the 'receptacle', but have omitted a letter from the 4-letter 'object' (27 contributes its last 2 letters to this)

Well at last, once you stop working and actually sit down and look things through properly it all becomes glaringly obvious......I would like to thank everyone that discussed this with me, both for making the effort, and also for showing such restraint and not telling me the answer (even though you must have been screaming it at the screen!), which is exactly what I was hoping for. I am extremely grateful.

I knew what was required, but was just being too traditional and for a moment forgot I was doing an advanced cryptic where the usual laws go out the window!! Love it!!

Now just got to decide if I am comfortable with the relocation, but seems reasonable to me.

Thanks one and all, I realise I was being dumb, but knowing that it wasn't my answers that were incorrect saved me alot of nugatory effort........had the same problem with the pentominoes, finished it fairly quickly and spent double the time convincing myself I had made an error somewhere........finally onto 4029.
