I am a 24 year old male who has been suffering from Body odour / bad breath for the past 3 and a half years. I first noticed this issue, when people started covering their noses discreetly when I am around, i went to see my GP. i was advise to step up my personal hygenie. I started taking showers and brushing twice daily. but this didn't seem to change this. The problem is almost ruined my life. Over the past 3 years, i have had a tonsillectomy, had a camera inserted into digestive system, through my bum and again though my mouth (endoscopy), had numerous scans, blood and urine tests. All to no avail. the only thing they ever found was some ulcers in the stomach which was treated. I have also tried some complimentary medicine on my our own. My GP also sent me for some counselling -which i attended -but i am pretty sure the problem is not in my head. There is no history of this kind of thing in my family and I cant think of anything from my past that could have caused this. I work in a professional job, and I find it very depressing for work mates to cover there nose when you walk pass them or give opinions in meetings. At first i thought I was been picked on, but even people that i do not know (in supermarkets, public transport etc) do the same. even worse on the personal front - very difficult to make / keep friends. I invest a lot in perfumes, deodorants and the like, but they dont seem to work for me. How can I rescue the rest of my life from this problem? Or is this just what I am? Please help me out of this misery.

any new updates???

Wow I can swear you are describing me... I too have all the things you described. Now that I think back, I think I have always had it, but it is getting worst now with more stress.
Problem is, thinking about it makes you stress more and I think you smell ever worst (if it is possible).
I think there is a strong possibility of genetics in it also, does your father or mother or sisters/brothers have it?
let me know if you or anybody find anything to control this odour....

Hi kingbadman,

No good news on this issue, im afraid. I think what has happened to me is that I have learnt to accept this problem and spend less of my time thinking about it. Though I still notice people (mainly people that know me, but also strangers) react to my presence.

As far as I know, there is no history of odours in my immediate family.

Last summer, I had a serious illness which kept me in hospital for a week. During the time I underwent many blood tests and scans (In the space of a month I gave dozens of blood and urine samples and had multiple X-rays, CT, MRI and ultrasound scans). All the issues picked up were treated. But none relates to the odour problem.

I think I will agree there is a psychiatric element to it as well. But I do not think its solely mental.

From medical viewpoint, I was diagnosed with GORD /GERD (google it) about 5 years ago and none of the medication prescribed appear to work. Recently, I was told I had irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and was advised to vary my diet to see what works best for me.

I think getting older makes me realise that life MUST go on inspite of this problem. So I am just making sure I eat well, keep up personal hygenie see how it pans out.
Your story bought tears to my eyes as I too have the same problem and have done so for approx. 15 years. I constantly search for ways to stop this offensive odour (which I am unable to smell) and have also spent a huge amount of money going from doctor to doctor.

My confidence has gone and I am concerned for my son who is due to start school next year as I don't want him to be teased because his mum stinks!

I too have tried everything, deodorants(and I have done everything to ensure that my personal hygiene is as decent as possible), perfumes and, detoxes but to no availe. This offensive smell has made me so depressed that I hate being in public for fear that someone will say something (which has happened on a number of occasions).

I crave an answer to this problem. My family is an innocent party to this problem though my husband swears that he can only smell the bad breath not the body odour side of things.

I have just change my diet by taking out caffeine, milk and cheese. I will let you know how things go.

I am in the same boat as many of you. It started about 8 years ago when I was living in a tropical part of China. I thought coming back to Canada would help, but it hasn't changed anything yet. Too bad you guys haven't found any effective solution either. Recently I found that foul breathe and body odour can be caused by the body not being able to break down certain foul smelling omponents/chemicals in food. One serious problem is called trimethylaminuria, which produces a foul fish smelling odour. Active charcoal is suggested for treating it, among other steps. But for many people no treatment can work :(. I'm going to try this next - fingers crossed.
Hello again,
Sorry for bad English (not my native language)!
I have seen a doctor , she is a genetic-scientist and researches metabolism.
She told me that it could be some kind of acidosis or Trimethylaminuria.
She believes that the last one is affecting me.
Trimethylaminuria can be started in adulthood.
So now I'm refuse to eat eggs, fish, beans, soya, nuts, any kind of seeds and I do not overdo eating dairy products.
(especially avoid Fish and egg together)
stress should be reduced (stress is the hardest part - this bad smell causes the stress and stress causes the Bad Odour)
Because of this disease I have resigned from my career and trying to start work at home...
Now the stress is low and I feel good, I do not smell any more.
Good luck to everyone have been destroyed by this nasty disease and let' stay alive!
