Good Morning to you all! This is “King John” (aka rockfordill) with the continuing saga of the Life of a Young Classics Scholar. I suppose I had hoped for a spell in academia; taking A-levels in Latin and Greek followed by university, but having an artist father it was clear that the budget would not stretch that far. Preparing to earn my living, I took articles with a small London firm of Chartered Accountants and (after 5 or 6 years and much blood, sweat and tears) I became an FCA. I initially worked and practiced in Johannesburg, South Africa in the early 60’s (which was in those days a sparkling, prosperous city) but I surrendered it all for an American girl and a career running a factory in Rockford, Illinois, making machine spares for aircraft, etc.
I continued to develop my interest in bird watching, natural history and the Arts, but other interests had to be put on hold. I am referring to Rugby. In view of the fact that my old school, Marylebone Grammar, founded The Saracens Rugby Club – together with my having a Kiwi father, it is not surprising that I always preferred the oval ball!
