I think it's that you'll never know if you were right, you'll only know if you were wrong.

The worst thing about being an atheist is not having that hope that there is something better and everything is for a reason. I truely envy those with such a strong belief in their God that that belief alone is a comfort to them in times or great sorrow.
However I also don't believe that if there is a God/Gods that he/she/they would punish a non-believer with the fires of hell. I think people will be judged on their humanity. If there is a God than I believe that even a devout believer who has behaved abominably will be punished and a non-believer who has led a good life will not be.
I am an atheist but a good person. I would not kill or hurt anyone in the name of religion. x

It all comes down to common sense, knowing right from wrong, treating others as you would wish to be treated yourself. I don't need anyone to tell me those things, I know, I feel and that's how I treat others...with respect, common sense, feeling and love. Knowing right from wrong is far greater than a belief in something that cannot be seen IMO.
Nothing's wrong with believing in a God
There's plenty wrong with having mandatory acts of worship in public schools and having bishops in the House of Lords.
You can believe what you like in the privacy of your own home - just don't come around expecting special privilages because you happen to believe in magic spirits
