You hear differing views on how to cook a steak Some people say don't oil the pan, some say don't season before, others will season before cooking, should the steak be at room temp or out of the fridge?

So what is the best process to use to ensure the best steak? Thanks.

I am surprised that with your avatar, trig, that you even bother cooking your meat.....
For goodness sake, if you find it so hard to do, go out to dinner.
lol daisynonna - one thing though, it's a bit late for this evening......
I never cook steak in the house - have tried in the past but I can never cook mine enough without burning it. I like mine to be cooked to buggery (have even been known to microwave it!).
aaaaaaagh - flump.
Oh sher!.......never nuke steak!....cook in a griddle pay, get the pan hot, oil the steak, cook to your taste!...
That's why I don't cook them at home. I am not a big meat eater (I am really fussy about food) and never had a steak until my late twenties. I am a complete nightmare, that's why I don't usually eat with everyone else as I make the children eat proper food and don't want them picking up my habits (they will eat anything, including veg), although I do sit with them.

It worked out okay, I wouldn't say great. Probably it was a little overdone but far from tough. I must look into a few different way to jazz it up. All I did was cook a few onions into the juices of the pan whilst the steaks rested.
On the few times I eat steak I go for ribeye. Raise to room temperature, oil lightly and put under maximum hot grill.
