Unusual to mount a gold coin in brass - you sure it isn't gold?
on dickinson's real deal today the dealer paid £1400 for 3 gold sovereigns and 3 half sovereigns and david dickinson said it's because they don't sell for scrap value they sell to sovereign collectors, these were george v too i think
As long as the mount hasn't damaged the coin it won't affect it's value - but don't just chuck it away until you are sure it's brass......

It looks like brass although I'm not sure, it's a different colour than the coin, it's a mount at the top so you can put it on a neck chain.
You might find that the mount is 9 carat and the coin 18 so they will look different. A good jeweller should advise you.

Thanks for that link dotty
Thanks to google: the £5 coin is 22 carat so will be much richer in colour than a 9 carat mount.

Thanks shoota, I'm going to have to take it somewhere, I don't seem to know the difference between a £5-00 gold coin and a full sovereign, some go for £350 on ebay and others £2000, they look the same to me
VERY likely to be a 9 carat gold mount.
