Will we see the Bulgarians and Romanians taking over from the Poles?

How will our schools cope let alone out benefits systems that will no doubt be milked.

there will be and to some extent already has been an outcry over the benefit changes being made by the current administration. Labour has said that they do not agree with them, will hit the poor, disabled the hardest and that it's patently unfair. So if some want the benefit, welfare system that is incredibly costly, to change, how do they propose to do it. Many on here say that you shouldn't penalise those who are unemployed, but what if they have never worked. Some don't see that as right, that you should take out whilst never having contributed. So when the changes come into force April this year, will there be outrage, or a simple, about time. This will affect many, perhaps we should scrap the welfare state and start again from scratch. Only give to those who have earned it, paid into the system, and that would take out of the equation any more recent incomers who think that we are a soft touch. It seems that one is damned if you do and damned if you don't. I see that the system is patently unfair, that there are those who are work shy, never intend or intended to work, yet those who have, will also be punished, by the withdrawal of some benefits. Time we put our own house in order, indeed however that will take a lot longer, and be a damn sight more painful, and won't ever be right whichever way you look at it. To constantly give hard working tax payers money to those who haven't ever done a days work, there are exceptions of course, is morally wrong.
We can't have it all ways, make it fairer for those in work, and not so easy for those that haven't.
em10 is correct in that there is absolutely no right answer. Whatever happens with welfare reform, there will be people who lose out. Perhaps a voucher system needs to be established, whereby instead of being credited with cash, claimants will be eligible for vouchers for food, clothing and heating etc. it wouldn't be perfect, because vouchers could be traded for cash, but (and this would take considerable investment), a verification process could be established whereby when you want to spend the vouchers, you have to provide ID which could be checked against a central database (like a swipe card).

Not only could this be a step to reducing the overall cost of the benefits system, could also clamp down on fraud (look at how chip and pin reduced credit and debit card fraud).

The Welsh are Unfriendly
The Irish are Mad
The English are stuck up. ///

Well that has truly insulted all the UK citizens, how very brave of you, since we can't attach any label on you.

But are you now just as brave for you to continue and insult all those others, if you dare?

// We shouldn't have been in "their " countries in the first place .///

Turn that remark on it's head, and you will find that, that is the whole point of this thread?
If that article was printed in a credible and newsworthy paper I might have taken it seriously but this rag they call the Sun will print anything, even without facts, just to increase its circulation. This is the same rag that printed, "GOTCHA" as its headline when over 300 young Argentinean sailor's lives were lost when Thatcher ordered the sinking of the Belgrano during the Falklands conflict. "Mass Murder" would have been a more appropriate headline seeing that the ship was sailng away from the British exclusion zone as ordered to do so by the commander of the British fleet.

I have been known to scavenge for food and I am one of your 'lazy Brits'.

I have been known to go blackberrying on occasions. :0)
/And what could be better for some of them, than to come to Britain to live. :0)/

exactly right aog

it's another consequence of a great colonial past

particularly when we told people (in good faith i believe) that this was the Mother Country and that fundamental aspects of British life should be admired and emulated
Zeuhl

But will you agree Zeuhl, that just like the problems we now find ourselves in with the EU, before Labour let in all these immigrants into our country, should we have first had a referendum, do we wish this country to experience unlimited immigration, and do we wish to embrace state multiculturalism?
I agree aog with this:

'unlimited' immigration is unsustainable as there will inevitably be more people who want to live here than is good for those already here.
our govt of the day seemed to 'sleepwalk' into the East European influx

'multiculturalism' - I don't believe in it as a concept for this or any other country.

I'm not sure what you mean by the term, but my understanding is that it is the idea 'that several different cultures (rather than one national culture) can coexist peacefully and equitably in a single country'

People may have cultural heritage from other places which I think is rather enriching, but those must be subservient to people's desire to be British, even if by doing so the notion of what that means evolves slightly.

Even in the 'new' countries i have lived in or spent time in such as Australia, Brazil and USA, people often retain and display ethnic characteristics but the notion of being first and foremost a Brazilian, an Aussie or an American is promoted especially hard by most.
AOG

Do you really think I meant all that about the Scots, etc. It was a joke prompted by your remarks to me. You silly old thing!!!
And was scavenging for blackberries for survival!! ;o)
Oh, and I am English, so obviously 'Stuck up' according to myself.
c'mon, aog, get a gsoh!
LoftyLottie

I think we have took this thread to it's limits, and we just keep going around in circles, but to try and prove to you, why some of your comments made me assume that you were being anti British, here are excerpts from some of your posts.

/// We are an idle race in general now. ///

/// They work harder and also are very agreeable to lots of overtime to increase their income. Not true of the Brits!! ///

/// I do not apply this to all Brits by the way!! But we are known for our laziness. ///

/// We will all pack up and emmigrate!! But god help the country we emmigrate to because we are all lazy! ///

All that and not a 'smiley' in sight.
"/// We will all pack up and emmigrate!! But god help the country we emmigrate to because we are all lazy! ///

Not a smiley, I agree. But surely you can see it was a joke.
See jno's comments. Humour and irony sadly goes over some people's heads. Smiley's shouldn't be needed.
