@DTC I agree with you. He had to go - quite apart from anything else, he was fatally compromised by the apparent callousness of the remark.
Someone earlier suggested that, because of the time delay between the remarks being made and all this publicity now, that this was evidence of a witch-hunt. It was more to do with the various internal investigations and reports that needed to be conducted which caused the delay rather than any other reason.
That investigation went on for too long. DTC, you mentioned 3 major contraventions or words to that effect - was that from an article, or based upon your own experience of such matters?
And you also said something about "homophobia" - Has he said something else, or was this a word used in error?

Well here is my take up on this affair.
Yes he was wrong to make such a disgusting statement, that sort of thing just cannot be excused, but cries of 'resign' is not going to achieve anything, what is with this 'resign' obsession nowadays, every time someone speaks out of turn?
He knows what he said was completely out of order and has apologised most strongly, and the reason he has not done so before is because he had to wait till after some form of inquiry.
Perhaps before some of us are ready to condemn others for stupid, and sometimes disgusting remarks said at the spur of the moment, should recall some things they have come out with in the pub, club or on the golf course, and after wished that one had never said them?
Yes there is a difference here, he is in a position of responsibility and should have known better, but for all his faults he is still a human-being bearing all the faults and indiscretions that can go along with it.
After all how many have said In jest maybe, "Old people should be put down after a certain age"?
Or more seriously "Invalid scooters should be banned", not realising what the consequences would be to a disabled person that would be, if they were to be.

well hatred of fellow man, lazy gun, a section of them at least. Do not know if there is a term for the hatred of disabled folk - there is a crime in the US simply titled "disability hatred" - not sure we have the equivalent as it gets wrapped up in the Equality Commission umbrella.
As to the internal charges, the council down here have mentioned he has contravened three; (i) disrepute of the council and exposure to equality prosecution (ii) contravening equality policies of the council and (iii) breach of conduct - source local BBC news

I think that there is an issue to be explored and that is how in feck's sake did it take them the length of time to come to the conclusions that the Council did. In any major commercial organisation, the inquiry would have lasted perhaps a week, maybe two. This delay is disgraceful and has only served to exacerbate the situation. But then Cornwall County Council are totally inept. There are a lot of us down here who would sweep them out and put in a much more business and services-driven organisation where performance was key. They charge incredible rates and we get zip......how bad is it? Well a Band G house down here pays more in tax than a 10 bedroom mansion in Mayfair or Chelsea......and I bet the services are less than half.
The roads are full of pot holes, the lanes and roads are a disgrace with rubbish (and this is a tourist area), the public conveniences are closing, the local museums are backing out their opening hours, our car park taxes are penalising, the traffic wardens in Truro and Perranporth are frequently in the papers (and the Nationals) for their 'exuberance' and wonderful civil approach to visitors, and scandal after scandal, with Lavery (the last Chief Exec) in the current issue of Private Eye.
