Dirty numberplates

Do the police bother stopping cars who have number plates which are so dirty that you can't see them? And do you get points or a fine for this? I see so many cars like this on the road.

It is an offence to drive with dirty or unreadable number plates. You may be fined or receive points or your license. I think it's down to the individual police officer as to whether to stop you.

I got stopped just before christmas for having a dirty numberplate. Because I ride a bike, all the muck flies off my wheel straight onto the plate. The cop did say that it can warrant a fixed penalty of �40, but he let me go. I just said I had been riding for an hour and it was clean when I started out and he didn`t really bother about it, just let me know.

Although a cop on a bad day would have gone straight to his pad.

The police announced some time ago that they would be treating drivers harshly because of speed cameras. They do not seem to have carried out the threat..

Does this apply to police as well? We were watching an incident out of the office window last week when an unmarked police car pulled up to join the mob. The rear number plate was completely unreadable due to dirt! The front one may have been the same, I couldn't see it.

It amazes me in the States that half the cars you see have no front number plate ... what if they ran over someone and drove off ... just can't understand why it isn't enforced.

Some states only require a rear plate. But if you park in a carpark, make sure you face the right way.

I got stopped a few weeks back for an unreadable rear reg plate due to dirt. (gritted roads) the officer was very friendly,and asked me to give it a wipe. I did,and he was happy to let me on my way.
