A new calculator for you is in the post, EDDIE ;-)

6.25 miles in 15 minutes is 25mph. Airliners make controlled descents at about 2000ft/minute which is a vertical 22.72mph.

I agree that anything still generating lift or just pushing air out of the way (falling leaf style) could have taken up to that length of time.

Unaerodynamic pieces should travel as fast, or faster than a free fall parachutist and they, reputedly get up to 120mph (faster if they go into a piked dive). That's a shade over 3 minutes, from 33,000'.
Practically speaking Hypo
the lockerbie fragments took 20 mins to hit the ground....

played out later on in the evg of the crash
At the crash site this evg

' you cant stay here amongst the crash bits: someone may shoot you '
and that would be because a so called drunken guard shot over the official invdstigators' heads and they walked off in a huff

ran for their kevlar vests more like.....

Investigator: Hi I've come to find out why this fell out of the air - or as the Beeb say : stopped flying and didnt land
Guard: I shoot you
Interference with the crash site has been described as 'inhumane'.

If so, what word can we use to describe the failure to even collect the bodies? Is there anything stronger than 'inhumane'?

I suppose it is Grief - what ever you do with the bodies, you get it in the neck. Leave them and they rot in the sun, and collect them you are not respecting them.
