Bit of help please 45ac handguns (8) ?i?earms thought would be firearms but then thought maybe sidearms - any thoughts please

Firearms is general for all guns but sidearms refers to weapons carried on the person so that would seem to match hand guns better

Agreed. Sidearms is the better answer. It's another example though of an ambiguous clue in the DR and I expect there will be complaints over this or they might accept both

Nothing ambiguous about it, a Handgun is a Sidearm.

It is not an either or. Sidearms refers to handguns. Fire arms refers to all arms.

A handgun is a sidearm but it's also a firearm isn't it? I'm sure they are looking for sidearm but I think the DR has left itself open to complaints again

I agree that unless the setter was careless the answer is sidearm,but I'm just saying I expect them to get complaints again

I'm not surprised. The DRs clues have been flawed on quite a few occasions and have previously had to declare crosswords as void
