strange characters when typing Word doc

When I type in one particular document (Word 2002) instead of normal letters I get those weird characters. How do I change it back to normal?! Thanks.

Save changes to Word doc?

When I close a Word document after not making any changes, it asks 'Do you want to save changes?' Why? Will it save it in some different format if I say yes? Thanks
