Perfectly good clues and gimmick but the inspiration for this (as described in Wiki) was so utterly depressing that we abandoned the grid stare in limine.
I thought the clues were set at the ideal level of difficulty -- difficult but not so fiendish as to lose the all-important enjoyment factor. The endgame is curious; no problem with the final bits... ...

Not the first outing for this theme in the Listener, but not for some time. Plenty of thematic material, some cleverly worked clues, not all the misprints jumping out. A good challenge. Thanks, JFD
