(This is a rerun of a question I asked a while back in the main category. Didn't get any replies there - could it be that the real buffs dwell in subcategories only? Sorry to be such a pain in the proverbial but I really want that poster - if indeed it exists.)

I used to own a black-and-white photo postcard from a Martha Graham production where dancer Merce Cunningham comes flying through the air in one giant leap. A woman (Graham?) sits at her desk in a jaded pose studying his flight toward her as if she were assessing his flying techniques rather than anticipating his company. Cunningham's body is cram full with energy, he's like a spring just released; looking at the picture you feel he must surely bounce once he lands.

I'd love to have this photo on my wall as a poster but haven't been able to find it. I'm good at advanced googling but search engines do provide different results in different countries - so if you're in the mood for some googling and you don't live in Sweden...

no point in bling in my teeth, they'd just fall out along with the rest of the tooth, Kit, alas... I'll just stick with spinach and hope it looks like emeralds from a distance

hiya Kit... well, I have been up half the night watching yet another silent Swedish movie - Krkarlen (called The Phantom Carriage in English) - spooky, but I must say I thought the drunk got off very lightly at the end having killed the Salvation Army lass with his germs <hm, this must sound like complete madness if you haven't seen the film...>

Good morning jno, great to see your mug here <but why the hell are we in a chambre separe> ;-)

Haven't seen that film but Selma Lagerlf who wrote the book was a great storyteller and the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, and not just 'cos she lived in the right country, either.

I'm off to The English Shop and other mysterious places, will tell you all (???) tonight what I bought.

i screamed out loud at 1.34...

Oh hi Vinny, you weren't here when I started! Definitely too much basil - "Amy"? You're worse than your great great (I've forgotten how great, two "greats"?) grandfather, can't remember which girl is which... Another fine song though - it's so thrilling to be there when that kind of star is born, she's fantastic. Robinia, I don't believe the single (Mercy) had even been released when you played that one to us?

PS And don't say I remember everything Vinny 'cos it is kinda hard to forget a man who had three wives you know, ha ha!
I hardly llike to ask whose wives they were, Kit...
ST George ere....
Ive come to slay the Dragons....jno and kip first...hehe..!(:O)

~~~~Happy ST Georges day~~(*_*)
Bit of advice needed please. Long time friend found dead at his house, yesterday, funeral Friday. He has been divorced for 2 years (his choice) but ex-wife doing the funeral, his mother coming over from mainland. Left a 19yr old daughter and 15yr old son. What do I say and do, I mean we are all friends although haven't seen the ex socially for a while. What do I say to the ex. They were glad to be divorced.
p.s. not sure yet if it was suicide - and if it was.........what?
Hello Blossoms
Well ..that's very sad Neti ..difficult one ..I would just go with the flow .These sort of situations are always hard .I can't offer you any advice really ...just be there for your friend who you obviously had more to do with in the last couple of years then his ex wife ..Just offer your condolences to the family and offer to help in any way you can ..that's about all you can do really and see where it goes from there xx
Hope you are all well otherwise ..lovely dawgies Woofie ...I bet you are proud of them .They look so sweet and appealing .
I am conspicuous by my absence ..I hope ..! I've been on gardenIng duties .The last few days .well the whole week actually ..has been glorious here so I've been bashing the garden into shape ...and don't I know it .I have just had a Cashmere Moments soak as it is now raining ....bloomin' typical after all that hard work .. .never mind ..time for a large gin and chs on toast ....xxxx
Oh Neti... is that the same friend who had the fire and there were some issues about drugs too...?
My advice would be not to be afraid of saying those things that may sound like clichs - like: "I couldn't believe it when I heard the news" or even "stupid" things like "but I spoke to him only last week!" - or whatever resonates within you yourself. Don't fear the banal. Everyone who's personally involved will know what you mean, because they will have felt it too.
I've been taught that when you've been through serious shock - as the children probably have - it's often a good thing to ask extremely prosaic questions concerning that moment of shock. Not "How did you feel" but much more prosaic stuff like "Where were you when you were told", "Who told you", "What did that person say", "What happened next" - things like that. In a sense you leave your body when you have a serious shock, and that type of question helps you return to it retroactively, now that you're in a safe place.
Later on - probably not now - they will treasure hearing things about him that they didn't know first-hand. Doesn't have to be "interesting" or "important" things - remember to tell them the little things. Like: "Your dad wore a bandana tied around his wrist that entire summer" et cetera - things that make it possible for them to create images.
His mother will want to hear how much good there was in him - and perhaps where it came from... Or some memory of yours that she can bind into her own bond with him, like: "He told me you taught him how to play Canasta" - it seems like a banal phrase but it tells her that he spoke of her, that she was with him, even when she wasn't.
Concerning the suicide issue... that's a really tough one. If it does turn out to be suicide... I'd probably just try to convey that it's not taboo to tell it like it is. There are so many kids and widows/widowers locked in the suicide closet; I would just try and de-shame them. Often the child of the same sex will feel doomed as if it were written in his own stars too to eventually meet the same fate. I believe you can work against that by relieving everyone involved of shame. I think you're the right person to do that, Neti, you're not judgmental. Good luck. (Sounds silly, but it's heartfelt.) And don't forget you've experienced a loss, too, so be mild with yourself.
Thank you all - the sad thing is he had a debilitating disease and he was in a lot of pain, and the 19yr old daughter has also been diagnosed with it. The latest and probably best thing is that none of us is to know how he died, so if it was suicide, the kids and us will never know.
Oh and kit that one with the fire and drugs has finally dumped her partner and is getting on with a healthy and happy life without him! Totally redecorated and refurnished the flat - no traces of him left!! good on her!!
As in it can't be determined - or as in his ex or his mother know, but have decided not to tell the rest of the family?? If it's the latter... I think they need professional help before they make that kind of decision. It's a heavy secret to live with even if it's done to protect the girl. I'm not sure it's right. Sometimes people find things out anyway, later in life, when "the protector" is already gone and it's too late to ask all those questions that arise. For all we know, the kids could even stumble upon this thread. Sounds very much to me like the secret-keepers need to talk to a wise professional person before they decide. (Or perhaps you did simply mean it can't be determined, Neti, I'm such a foreigner...)
Is it safe to come out yet... What a shame you decided to slay us yesterday, St Vincent, Robinia had just asked jno to make breakfast for you today, wearing her sexiest slippers and everything. Just so you know what you're missing
I'm starting to get serious withdrawal attacks from meatball attacks here, Derby... <Think I'll just sit here and practise my reaction skills so I'm prepared when she strikes again> who you calling sluggish
Question Author
Thinking of you tomorrow, Neti.
Question Author
(Hm, typo. I meant "symptoms," obviously. Withdrawal symptoms.)
Aaaany-hooo.
Oh, gee, thanks - for me? You had a whip-round just for me?
quiet in here these days... first half of my evening's work has gone disastrously, maybe second half will be better. Then I take my plantar fasciitis to the surgeon tomorrow morning bright and early and he decides whether I need a steroid injection (shudder), then the rest of Saturday is my own! If I can walk. So have a nice weekend everyone...
Well I hope he can sort your plantar fasciitis out Jno .The injection will sort you out .Fear not ..I have had one or two ! Have a nice weekend too and rest that foot afterwards ..
Hope everyone is OK ...
I had a good day today ..have won 250 quids worth of House of Fraser gift vouchers from a competition I entered so I shall be off to the bright lights of Norwich to fritter away my ill gotten gains asap
..A pigeon dropped in from Derby to say they were not too good but that is no excuse to lollop about ,swig gin and Becks or hang about in a state of undress with curlers in . And any misdemeanors will be dealt with when the office reopens .
