My Mum is 90 years old, in a nursing home, and has now stopped eating and drinking and I have been told she doesn't have long.

How long can she live without drinking or eating?

At my wits end here, I'm so upset and its not even happened yet - its not helping with Christmas coming either :-(

Ferlew has said it, sometimes 'Permission to travel' needs to be given, I know it sounds strange but it is true.

You will shed many more tears and often they are cleansing, but she is leaving you a legacy of love.

Take care of yourself.
Thinking of you at this sad time...May it be a peaceful release for mum..xxx
i agree with the "permission to travel" comments. think of it as her getting her christmas wish to go to her parents. you have all my sympathy, its so hard. may her journey be swift and painless and may she leave you fond memories and her love. x
Know exactly what your going through Yeleknots.I experienced the same situation with my own Mother in February 2012.She could not swallow despite the nursing home staff trying to keep her hydrated.Mother had been eating much or drinking for a while and she was in bed slowly ebbing away for 4-5 days.Hopefully,as in my case, the nursing home will keep you advised as to the situation so that you can be with her at the end so that she doesn't die alone. In this whole sad business the one consolation was that I am I was with my Mother when she passed away.
Should have said had not been eating or drinking much.
yelenots, much love to you. x
My thoughts are with you tonight yelenots, I have been through the same, and it is so hard to deal with. I hope it all goes peacefully x

Thank you everyone xx
My thoughts are with you too yelenots. It's sad to loose a loved one at any time but at Christmas time it can feel much worse.
I echo everyone's kind words yelenots. Even though you have to face the inevitable it's very upsetting. Your mother has just 'had enough' now and wants to slip away.
I don't suppose you will ever meet anything quite as hard as this. But I believe that once someone has lost the will to live or fight it sadly is just a matter of time, about which you can do nothing. My heart goes out to you and I send my very best wishes, yelenots.
Thinking of you today Yelenots.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. My Mum passed away peacefully this afternoon, - feel so sad as I been with her most of the morning and only popped home for a short while so I wasn't with her :-(

Yopu have my condolences, yelenots. She is now at peace. xxx
Many condolences with your sad loss, yelenots.
So sorry to hear your news yelenots, even when it's expected the death of a loved one always leaves a gap in your life.
Yelenots, my sincere condolences. Don't be sad that you weren't there at the time, it happens so often that it seems to me some people need to be alone to let themselves go.

I hope you find peace and I'm sure in time you will get great comfort from the memories of your Mum.
