Large people on planes.

I popped over to Budapest at the weekend to see a friend who is working there, and on the flight I sat next to a lady who must have been at least 20 stone - she was huge.

In addition to taking up her own space, her size meant she was taking up probably about a third of my space as well, which made for an extremely uncomfortable flight.

This isn't the first time this has happened to me.

Should there be a booking condition whereby if you are over a certain weight you have to purchase 2 tickets - and if you don't, you don't fly?

The current situation is not fair on those of us within a 'normal' weight band who are made to suffer because some people can't control their eating.

Oh.....
I still don't see why that problem, which you've just outlined rodge, is my concern. As I (and others have said) I've paid for a FULL seat, I expect and demand to get that full seat.
I haven't read all of this thread but:

I am about 20stone (female) and would readily pay extra to have extra space on a plane.

There are worse things in life than being fat.

^ Well said... give that woman a cream cake :-)
^ 'man' even...
bugger... was right the first time. Sorry...
why dont the airlines have some rows where they have only 2 seats instead of 3 for example and have them spaced further apart and then sell these at a premium in the same way as extra leg room seats?

I dont mean behind the wee curtain with the real cutlery and stuff, just in the cattle truck area with the rest of the poor people ;o)
Flying on an airplane is not a charity. You pay for your seat and do not expect to subsidise the person next door by donating part of your limited space. Just seems like common sense. Nothing to do with *** off the large people.
No idea why it decided to delete that word
annie, presumably its because they want to make as much money as possible, and sorry don't all shout, but i agree with flip flop, and having been stuck next to a bloke on a bus who was twice my size, and no i couldn't sit anywhere else, nor stand, perched precariously, waiting for that moment when i'd be pitched onto the floor of the bus. Lewis Hamilton was driving, or so it seemed.
Agree with Trim. About the flying that is (wouldn't know about any other situation!!) I but would rather to a large person that sit with one leg in the aisle and the other one with my knee pushing into the seat in front. I love the seats next to the safety exists, but they are hard to get. Flying is horrible I hate it.
'than sit'.
em, all the need to do is charge the seats at 1.5 times the ordinary price and they don't lose out...and larger people (or anyone who wants the extra space) don't need to pay for 2 seats, just 1.5.
After all the flying hassle we have had with large people we now try to book seats on planes that are 2 aisle 4 aisle 2. Prebook said seats and then no one gets in your space. Except each other.
why are so many people trying to make out this is a personal attack - implying people think large people should be treated like cattle or something?

no-one has said anything like this, so moaning as though they have, is actually just flagging up your own personal grievances...

flip flop just commented that her flight was very uncomfortbale due to this problem...thats unfair

i am all for being pc etc, but if that happened to me and i had to spend hours upon hours crunched up because of someone - for any reason at all - id be angry too....i have hypermobility and would be in agony if i had to lean to one side for hours, unable to shift around in my seat...that is not being 'fattist' it is being realistic....but the fact remains, if they need two seats then they should use 2 seats.

i am sure they didnt mean to upset flipflop and didnt want to take up extra space...but what they wanetd and intended is irrelevant.

i agree, there should be some sort of rule in place.
Sorry to spoil your fun but airlines do charge double for large people.
They have a test which involves sitting in the seat with the arm rests down and fastening the seatbelt.

Quite right joko.

Inceidentally, I've seen a number of posters refer to me as a 'she'.

I'm a bloke.
Rich, me old mucker, where have you been, surely not trying to fit into a small seat on ryanair, or should that be scottish air, is there one?
If people are charged more for a double seat on an airline then i am a little surprised, but i have been wedged into a seat with some burly bods and can say it makes for interesting or not conversations.
