Large people on planes.

I popped over to Budapest at the weekend to see a friend who is working there, and on the flight I sat next to a lady who must have been at least 20 stone - she was huge.
In addition to taking up her own space, her size meant she was taking up probably about a third of my space as well, which made for an extremely uncomfortable flight.
This isn't the first time this has happened to me.
Should there be a booking condition whereby if you are over a certain weight you have to purchase 2 tickets - and if you don't, you don't fly?
The current situation is not fair on those of us within a 'normal' weight band who are made to suffer because some people can't control their eating.

well there go England and Europe's chances of winning the Rugby World Cup if the big guys have to stay at home!
jno - the practice of weighing and balancing on small planes is quite common - had that done several times in the USA and Canada when flying dinky craft like the Embraerer or smaller....(<30 passengers)

I, for one, would ban all broadsheet newspapers!
It's no fun sitting next to one of those (or even between two) when the trolley comes.
I've been on buses where the double seat doesn't deserve the name, and one person's backside hangs over the edge. Don't the designers realise that the 'average' person is bigger than they were years ago?
Without being fat.

I think there's a difference between someone who is large and someone who weighs over 20 stone. If you're large you can probably still keep to one seat, if you're 20 stone plus then you will clearly need more space. I see no reason why you should not have to pay for that, I don't want other peoples wobbly bits occupying half my chair, (and I'm not small myself, I'm a size 16).
However, I do think the better idea is that airlines should provide bigger seats so that if you are particularly big then you can book to sit on those. Lets face it, if you're of that size, then you know full well you can't sit in a normal seat comfortably (or probably without embarassment) so having that option would probably be more useful.
