Tips For When In Hospital
125 Answers
I may be looking at a prolonged period in hospital.
I've only been in hospital twice once as a child and again for a two night stay 20 odd years ago.
I'm looking for tips for how to make the stay as comfortable as possible.
My biggest concern is do hospitals have free wi-fi????

So I can also volunteer for navigating duties.
Sorry to hear you have to go into hospital Eccles, I would take on all the advice given its all good stuff, and unless James Martin has helped with the hospital food, make sure you have a someone prepared to bring in food. I can recommend Queenofmean as a delivery person she can be very sneaky......

Our hospital gives free Wi-Fi to patients, but charges for the television and phones (we don't really have any restrictions on patients using their own mobiles though).
My advice, don't bring in any complicated books with you as your brain is likely to feel slightly scrambled, bring in puzzle books/magazines etc. Secure storage is very much at a premium, and I really wouldn't advise anyone to bring in anything too valuable to hospital. If you're looking at a prolonged stay, it can be nice to have one of your own pillows (ours are plastic covered so not terribly comfortable). Bring in some nice smelling lotion, and a small mirror is a good idea as mirrors for some reason are not that common. Bring in your baggiest slippers as your feet may may swell if you're having surgery (see far too many patients with brand new slippers who can't get them on).
If you're having visitors, prime them as to what is acceptable - biggest cause of rows in hospital are what the relatives bring in, best recent examples are husband bringing in wife's property in an Ann Summers bag (much to wife's embarrassment) and husband who when asked to bring in a towel brought in the towel that was used by their dog.
Take care!

My hospital has hardly any mobile signal inside the buildings, I would have to go outside. No internet access either as it is all on those cards you can purchase. Watch them though as the time runs through from when you start them rather than just for time watched. I used to share with another lady one time I was in or just get a few hours to watch what I wanted in the evening.
I had books (I don't have one but I can see how a kindle type thing would be ideal or a tablet you can do other stuff on if you can get wifi or a dongle), magazines (especially the ones with puzzles in) and puzzle books. Music is quite good to you can just switch off and use headphones if you want a bit of quiet, especially if there is a lot going on at night when you're trying to sleep.
I didn't find the food that bad really. I found some of the fresher stuff was nicer like the salads.
I found taking cordial was great as makes a nice change to plain water, especially when it's been sat in a jug for a while in a warm room!
The towels are a bit rubbish so if you have someone who can bring you in a nice towel and take it away to wash, that might be nicer (also the issue of finding someone to get you a towel!).
Baby or face wipes are good for a freshen up or nice and cooling for a light wash over between showers and some lip balm if you tend to get dry lips in warmer environments. Sucky sweets are good too.
Not too warm a dressing gown if you tend to get warm anyway as it's usually so warm in there, especially if you will have periods out of bed such as in a chair while they are making the bed, cleaning etc...
Decent shampoo and shower gel is a big one as they stuff they have isn't great and a sponge for a proper clean. Not a bad idea to buy a multipack of cheap ones so that they don't pick anything up.
I was warned to never leave any valuables unattended though there have been a fair few thefts from hospitals round here.
Definitely a munchies stash too! Nothing worse than getting the munchies outside of mealtimes and if the shop if closed or you can't get to it!
