one vegetarian coming to my dinner party - what shall I cook?
106 Answers
I'm trying to think of something that I can easily do a meat and non-meat version of as I personally don't think its a proper meal if it doesn't have meat in it so don't want to cook an all-veggie meal but don't want to do something totally different for the veggie - any ideas please? Thanks

If you are in or around the Somerset area, (given Pinki's location), I would thought it possible to find some wonderful farm reared bacon......and the difference is chalk and cheese.
Just like gross supermarket/farmed salmon versus wild salmon.........and before you get on about expense, I would rather have 1/2 the amount of a really nice, quality product versus a normal quantity of 'plastic' - one of the great things of living in France, as I have done, is they eat less of meat, but what they do is of a higher quality (and ditto other things as well)......having said that, they are even on the slide to lcd (lowest common denominator) products under the guise of convenience.

we have a couple of vegetarians in the family. in the past i've done a veggie curry with some chicken breasts or thights cooked seperately, along with all the other bits and pieces, samosas, etc., and that seems to satisfy everyones dietry needs. alternatively, i buy veggie things from the supermarket like cauliflower cheese bakes or goats cheese tartlets or whatever, and serve them up instead of the meat bit of the meal along with the veg and potatoes that everyone can eat. or make a chilli using quorn mince, no-one will know the difference.
By the way, ummm, by your inference, I agree with you on excessive use of salt....there is enough in natural food - though a french fry or jacket is my weakness in that area, then only sea salt. The only exception being if it is really hot out there......as if you are living in 30+ temps...or medically recommended.
Aww thanks Ron, very sweet of you. And to clarify the he/she is someone else's post, I am very much a girl :)
Am a bit torn on the bacon argument - I like a good dry cure bacon in a cooked breakfast but not sure I'd ever choose it instead of a steak or pork chop etc. Probably won't be putting it in the vegetarian curry either way though!!!

DT...yes I have eaten 'proper' bacon. Same as I have had 'proper' sausages....just don't like them. Same as our neighbours in Ireland who made 'proper' black pudding...yuk...and it's not the blood thing because I'd eat it if I was hungry enough. I also don't really like chicken...organic or not. It seems though, that I especially don't like things that appear on a fry up. I'm not a fan of beans either...but like eggs and mushrooms :-)
Love wild salmon and agree, there is no comparison.
