Where have all the old fashioned hardware stores gone?...the nice man in a brown overall & a pencil behind his ear would know what I meant by 'twisty, bolty thingy' (even if it hadn't been invented).

Oh, while browsing back through every answer I've ever given, I've just found this note of Mr Veritas's war experiences...

Seadragon~My problem with humanity is ~I was with the first regiment in WW2 to relieve a concentration camp.
You may have seen film of this,but I can assure you it was FAR worse,you cannot smell on film.
Oddly enough,my wife,who I married a few years later,was in this very camp.

I feel really sad for you ,having lost my own dear m-i-l not so long ago it brought a bit of lump to my throat and I know how you must be feeling ..Chin up old girl and come back and see us when you feel up to it.

Nice to see you again Dolly and hope that when you read this both you and hubby will be feeling much better .

We had a nice day out yesterday at the Maritime Festival where I stuffed my face with fried herring and we saw men in unform , tall ships and Newfies .

Lovely pics shaney & beautiful doggy, but 'newfie' made me splutter, haha..it's what some ex family who lived in Canada used to call the Newfoundland people...I think you're thrown to the bears for using that term nowadays. :o)

Sure hope we're right about Mr V or else our giggling would be very cruel. Although come to think of it, maybe it is, anyway? Sometimes it's difficult to feel sure about to what degree people are able to choose their actions. (But I admit I am giggling so far... just hoping it won't come back to haunt me...)

morning all...Hope you're all as well as you can be... don't think I'll bother with the painting comp thanks, I doubt that shades of beige will win any prizes. jno, apparently you've upset the doc with some big words that he didn't understand...have you been complaining about your medical mysteries again?

I just popped in to turn off the paraffin heaters for a few days...looks like we might be in for a few mild and dry-ish days. You never know we might actually shift a few hosepipes and deckchairs...hopefully no one'll notice the woodworm.

Morning All. Weather quite warm but not much sun at the mo. It might brighten up later. I'm giving Tai Chi a miss this morning and am going to a place called The Lavender Patch for lunch with my sister and her ladies group. It is a Lavender garden not far away. will let you know when I get back what it is like.

Hi Woofy ,so sorry to hear your sad news ,it never rains eh but what it pours . I'll be thinking of you . Hubby and I feeling a little better but unfortunately his chest xrays are showing a problem -not sure exactly what it is -but the Doctor has now put him on Steroids for the Chest infection ,has to go for more xrays in 6 weeks time. Loading him up with vitamins etc ,never seen him so lethargic . Anyway if anyone here prays please spare us one ,many thanks .

Absolutely lovely here at Shaneytowers 27 c and 31 c in the garden in the sun .Been beach bumbing this afternoon and paddling my leg then sat along the prom and read my book while Mr S mooched around the pier .He can't sit still :)
Sorry to hear about your husband Dolly . I'm not a praying person but I do hope he'll soon feel well again and that you both find the strength to get over it all and keep trucking along xx

Now then Sweedie ,we called into Morrisons on the way home and I spotted a cake. It was in the freezer section and it's called Almondy authetic Sveedish almond tarta with bits of Diam (Dime bar ) in it ,almonds ,chocolate and vanilla cream layers and it's gluten free .Do you know this cake ? I bought it anyway :)

According to the weatherpersons this is the last blast of summer for the next few days .I must say that in spite of some very wet weather in June we have had a lovely summer here. Being stuck so far out on the bulge I think a lot of bad weather missed us by inches :)

Lovely day. Thjere may be another one tomorrow. But that's about it. I always have high hopes of the heritage open house weekends, which are this and next weekend, and it seldom rains on me as I trudge round from stately home to windmill.

What, what, has jno been FAO'd? Where? (No pun intended he he, just wanna know:) Yes Shaney almond cake has been popular here for the last thirty years or so. There are lots of different recipes; generally they're sweet in a sickly way IMO but when they're good they're good. I'm 99 percent sure Vinny mentioned them a couple of years ago when I was the new Swede on the block. Didn't you Vinny. Vinny! Vinny? We want stories about Sandbanks please!

Speaking of dough, a REAL bread shop opened very close to where I live ( http://i30.tinypic.com/iz5nog.jpg ) and they specialize in sourdough bread (which I love) and don't use transfats (which I'm on a mission against) so I'm quite happy with the food situation:) The other day at the international fair/market I bought a Dutch nettle cheese which is soooo good I have to moan when I eat it, ha ha I can't STAND people who do that but it's that good! I bought a Gouda as well from the same girl, who by the way was wearing the prettiest blue-and-white apron in Delft pottery style. There were several Brits there (in fact someone told me the arrangers are British), they were selling toffee and fudge (too sickly sweet IMO...) and somebody from a place called Cherry Tree Farm was selling chutney and jam and just for good measure I bought some British cheese as well :) "Extra Mature Cumbrian Cheddar, Strong & Tangy" from The Lake District Cheese Co.

TWO of the British traders caught my attention by saying "are you okay", I took it to mean "may I help you", am I right in that? or else I must have looked as if I was going to faint that day...! Anyhoo, I also bought three soaps from Provence, an Indian bedspread, a German, handheld vegetable slicer/parsley chopper, two small Afric-... *voice fade-out*

All the heritage houses were free here at the weekend on the quay .Elizabethan House , Row Houses and merchants homes .I've seen them all so didn't bother this time as some of them involve climbing very steep staircases but we did go in the Nelson Museum and the Toll House for a look round Very interesting .They've pumped a lot of money into the local heritage round here which is good .
Have you been watching that programme Saving Britains Past with Tom Dykhoff Jno ? it was the demise of the country house last night .The amount that they knocked down after the war was unbelievable .
