Fitted Carpet

Since I got the new brown leather suite I had been swinging to terracotta/orange colours since I am sick of my mustard colours. I bought lovely tapestry cushion covers and have been looking to replace the beige rug with a terracotta rug which I viewed a few.

However the size of the rug that I even have at the moment and the size of the new rug doesn't "synchronise" with the one by two by three seater - ie you know - comes from the fireplace to the beginning of the 3 seater but doesn't go under the two seater.

I now have a notion that I may go for fitted carpet and am just round from my local carpet shop and have been quoted a price etc for a nice burnt orange speckled. Rather nice.

However I had wanted to keep the laminate floor down so that some day if I ever I get fed up with the carpet I can always lift it and go back to the laminate floor.

Anyway I wanted underlay of course and the fella has just told me the laminate would have to be lifted for the underlay and carpet BUT he could put the carpet over the laminate ie WITHOUT the underlay.

Sorry for being so long but I did want to explain a good bit. If the carpet goes over the laminate will it be Soft and comfortable enough or should I lift the laminate.

thanks for any answers.

£380 for a whole room?? I'm not up to date on carpet prices, but that sounds excellent. Go for it! We'll want pictures you know...;)
JJ. This house has laminate in every room. Three rooms and the hall, stairs and landing had carpet and underlay over the laminate, probably because the chap who put down the laminate was most likely drunk when he did it.
So far I have ripped up the carpets and underlay in two rooms. The gripper rods, on removal, do leave a very little mark but easily dealt with.
I see no reason to remove the laminate for fitting of underlay and carpet.

Zacs - a very interesting answer but I should be able to get that seen to by either neighbour or nephew.

Davebro - my friend moved to like sheltered dwellings (but apartments) - every apartment was covered with glued in horrific blue carpet.

One tenant had to hire a hammer drill or something like that to get it removed - it come away in strips. A total nightmare.

However my friend moved into same and her and others just put the laminate flooring over the horrible blue carpet and never had a bother.

Gness - I need you to know that the fella WON'T be putting underlay over the laminate flooring - just the basic carpet over the laminate.

If I want the underlay then I must remove the laminate.

Hope that helps everybody to understand and I appreciate all answers.
I've laid fitted carpet on laminate with no problems, and nothing fixing it down so removal at any time will be easy. (Furniture tends to keep it in place)

oh ok Canary - and no underlay?
No underlay.
P.S. Mind you, it's not particularly "Soft and comfortable".
Will you be able to open the doors with carpet down, JJ, or will you have to pay someone to plane them off?
Question Author
Thanks Canary - sure the laminate is cold too isn't it. It is just that I have bits of mats here and there ie like in the hallway and kitchen. I must say I couldn't do without my wee mats as walking on my bare feet would be too cold for me.

The patch that the lad gave me matches the cushion covers lovely and so without further ado - may go ahead with fitted. Talk it over with sister on Sunday. But she is a carpet fanatic anyway. Carpet all over the house and you know what it is lovely and warm.

Thanks everybody for your answers.

Now - I'll be wanting lovely burnt orange throws - have a few of those in the Amazon basket too. LOL

Barry - Zacs has mentioned that - don't know until I get it but I have taken off a door in my day and planed it myself but now with broken shoulder couldn't do it now - but as I have said either neighbour or nephew will do it.
Re laminate flooring. I know that we are in a minority but really dislike it...yes, fashionable but cold and impersonal and reminds me of dentists' waiting rooms. Give me full carpeting any day!
Give me real wood!

oh ginger - we finally agree on one thing AT LAST - LOL but don't want a post either way as each to their own. some people love wooden floors - others carpet.

I could laugh at ginger's opinion at my having money - oh yets pots of it - and when we all lived in the oul home - we hadn't a ronion on us. At one stage - underneath the settee cushions we sat on a yard door - poor or what. That is the 64 dollar question.

yes pasta - real wood is warm
We have had fitted carpet over a laminate floor in one of our rental houses and the guy said if the carpet had a foam back it would not need underlay. He put sheets of brown paper under the carpet so the foam from the underlay would not stick to the laminate floor .

We've also had webbed back carpet put over laminate with a regular underlay.

I think the carpet fitter is wanting more money to lift the laminate . Just tell him you want the carpet over the top of it.
Question Author
In fairness to him Aunt - he didn't suggest to me - I was querying it with him. Yes it would be extremely expensive for his men to lift the laminate but if I needed to my two nephews would have it up quite quickly as it is that click laminate.
Question Author
PS - The laminate is in a good state but believe it or not if it was in a bad way and I wanted to lift it - I would do it myself. Give it a couple of bashes and take it out of the "click".
jenny its a chew on taking up laminate, just get carpet over the top.

Has the carpet you want got foam backing or webbed backing? If its foam backing all you need to do is put some brown paper underneath to stop the backing sticking to the floor.
Question Author
aunt - know what foam backing is - and it does stick but don't know what webbed is. have just looked the stip and it is white "thick" material - that's the only way I can describe it.
